CHAPTER 31 — The Ghost of 1996

The vintage photograph felt heavier than the steel watch on her wrist. Valeria stared at her mother’s face—the identical curve of her jaw, the same dark eyes, standing alive and well in front of a sun-drenched villa long after she was supposed to be ashes in a Chicago cemetery.

"This is a forgery," Valeria said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper. "My mother died in a car crash on I-94. I have the police reports. I have the death certificate."

"A death certificate bought with American dollars and signed by a corrupt medical examiner," Victor replied smoothly, closing his leather briefcase with a soft snap. "Look at the background, Valeria. That is Marbella, Spain. The digital timestamp embedded in the physical negative places this in July of 1999. Three years after your father wept at an empty casket."

Valeria’s mind raced, trying to find a logical exit from the nightmare. "Why? Why would my father lie to me my entire life?"

"Because your mother didn't run away. She was hidden," Victor said, stepping closer, his piercing gray eyes locked onto hers. "She discovered that the Salgado family fortune wasn’t built on honest legal work. Your grandfather, and later your father, were the primary architects behind a global black-market asset-clearing house. They didn't just prosecute criminals, Valeria. They chose which criminals to protect, washed their money, and absorbed their assets."

The terrace door flew open. Ernesto stood there, his face pale, his breath catching in the freezing air as his eyes landed on Victor.

For the first time in her life, Valeria saw true terror in her father’s eyes.

"Valeria, get away from him," Ernesto commanded, his hand reaching inside his coat toward his service weapon.

"Tell him to draw it," Victor said calmly, not moving an inch. "Let’s see if the legendary prosecutor is ready to execute another witness."
