Chapter 2: A Weak Breath

“Help me!” Rosa shouted, levering her full weight onto the tool.

Victor remained on his knees for two long seconds, locked in a state of sheer disbelief. Then, as if an invisible switch flipped in his brain, he scrambled up and grabbed the steel handle alongside her. Together, they heaved. With a agonizing screech of metal and tearing wood, the heavy lid yielded, popping open just enough to break the airtight seal.

A soft, ragged wheeze escaped the casket—the sound of starving lungs drawing in air for the first time in hours.

Gasps rippled across the assembly. Women fainted into pews; men stumbled back toward the exits. Inside the satin-lined box lay Emily Vance. Her pristine silk burial dress was torn at the collar, her lips cracked, her skin deathly pale under the harsh chapel lamps. But her chest rose and fell.

She was alive.

Victor threw the lid back entirely, collapsing over the edge of the coffin with tears streaming down his face. “Emily! Oh God, Emily, I’m here! You’re alive!”

He reached out to cradle her face, his hands shaking with what looked like hysterical relief. But as his fingers drew within inches of her skin, Emily flinched away. It was not a gentle recoil; it was a violent, instinctive twist of her torso, a clear refusal of his touch.

The movement was subtle, but in the silence of the chapel, it landed like a thunderclap. Rosa saw it immediately. So did the family attorney standing near the alter.

Victor’s hand froze mid-air. The sobbing dried up instantly in his throat, replaced by a strange, frozen stillness. Emily’s eyelids fluttered open, dark eyes bloodshot and fixed entirely on the maid standing above her. She raised one trembling hand and locked her fingers tightly around the fabric of Rosa’s orange sleeve.

Dry, rasping lips parted. Emily forced words out through a throat stripped raw from screaming into the dark.

“Don’t… let him… touch me.”
