Chapter 15: Out of the Shadow

One year after the incident at the chapel, autumn had returned to the city. The leaves along the avenue had turned brilliant shades of gold and crimson, and the crisp morning air felt invigorating and pure.
A silver town car pulled up to the curb outside the St. Jude Funeral Chapel. Emily stepped out into the crisp breeze, carrying a simple bouquet of fresh white lilies and yellow roses. Rosa emerged from the passenger side, walking beside her up the granite steps.
The chapel was quiet, but it no longer felt ominous. Sunlight poured through the tall arched stained-glass windows, painting warm geometric patterns across the pristine marble floor where wood fragments had once lain scattered. The broken white coffin was long gone, replaced by rows of peaceful pews and a simple stone altar.
Emily walked down the center aisle, her footsteps echoing softly against the stone. She stopped at the spot near the altar where her life had been returned to her.
She knelt quietly, placing the bouquet of flowers on the pristine floor.
"A year ago, I woke up in absolute darkness," Emily whispered, looking up at the light filtering through the windows. "I thought my story was over. I thought no one would ever hear me."
Rosa knelt beside her, wrapping a supportive arm around her shoulders. "Someone will always hear you if you keep fighting to breathe, Emily."

Emily took a deep, full breath of the cool air, feeling her heart beat strong and steady in her chest. The terror of the coffin, the cold concrete of the cellar, and the shadow of Victor’s betrayal had finally washed away, leaving only light, freedom, and an unshakeable future ahead.
Hand in hand, the two women stood up, turned their backs on the altar, and walked out of the chapel into the bright afternoon sun.
