Chapter 5: The Cellar Floor

The narrative flashed back to twenty-four hours earlier inside the sprawling Vance Estate on the outskirts of the city.

Rosa Perez had been cleaning the wine cellar below the main house, wiping down the stone arches, when she heard a strange, dull thumping sound coming from behind the locked pantry door—a space Victor strictly kept off-limits. She had assumed it was rats, but as she pressed her ear against the heavy oak panel, she heard a muffled groan and the sound of someone feebly kicking the baseboard.

At the time, Victor had walked down the cellar stairs, catching her near the door. He had been aggressive, ordering her to pack her things and leave for the day, claiming she was intruding on private property. Suspicious and uneasy, Rosa hadn't left the grounds entirely. She had stayed parked in her car down the road, watching a private ambulance arrive and leave with a plain black body bag.

She knew Emily had been ill for weeks, but the timing felt wrong. The house had been too quiet; the preparations for the funeral had been unnaturally hurried, scheduled for less than forty-eight hours after the pronounced time of death.

Back in the hospital hallway, Detective Marcus watched Victor’s expression closely as he laid out the timeline.

“Mr. Vance,” Marcus said softly, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. “Emily Vance is currently conscious enough to answer basic questions. And when I asked her who gave her the tea that paralyzed her three days ago, she gave me one name.”

Victor backed away a step, looking desperately at his lawyer. “She’s delirious! You can’t take the word of a woman who just woke up from anoxic shock!”

“We also searched your estate’s private office an hour ago with an emergency warrant,” Marcus continued, stepping forward. “We found three empty vials of tetrodotoxin in your personal safe, along with an updated copy of Emily’s will—one that leaves her entire sixty-million-dollar real estate empire solely to you, signed just three days before her 'death'.”

Victor’s mouth opened, but no words came out. The polished facade finally shattered completely.

“Victor Vance, you are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder,” Marcus declared, pulling Victor’s arms behind his back and clicking the steel cuffs over his wrists.

As Victor was led down the corridor past the glass window of the ICU, Emily looked out from her hospital bed. Her breath was steady now under the oxygen mask, her hand resting warmly in Rosa’s. The fight was far from over, but the darkness of the coffin was gone—and the truth was finally out in the light.
