Chapter 4: Poison and Paralyzers
An hour later, the ICU at St. Jude Memorial Hospital was locked down under police guard. Lead Detective Marcus Vance (no relation to Victor) stood outside Emily’s room, reviewing the preliminary toxicology screen provided by the attending physician.
“It’s tetrodotoxin mixed with a high-dose synthetic sedative,” Dr. Aris explained quietly, tapping the digital chart. “In precise doses, it drops the heart rate to near zero, depresses respiration so low it’s almost unmeasurable by standard field equipment, and induces a state of profound paralysis that mimics brain death.”
“So someone deliberately put her into a coma that looked like death,” Detective Marcus murmured. “And whoever signed her death certificate didn't do a thorough workup.”
“Dr. Julian Thorne signed it,” the doctor noted, looking uncomfortable. “He’s the Vance family’s private physician.”
Outside the doors, Victor was pacing the hallway with his defense lawyer, Arthur Sterling. Victor looked visibly shaken, but his legal mind was already working to construct a narrative. He approached the detective as soon as the doctor stepped away.
“Detective, this is a miracle, but it’s also a tragedy of medical malpractice,” Victor insisted, his voice smooth and urgent. “Dr. Thorne declared her dead. I was in shock! I trusted his diagnosis. I had no idea my wife was still breathing when we closed that lid!”
Detective Marcus looked at Victor thoughtfully. “That’s a plausible story, Mr. Vance. Except for one detail.”

“Your maid, Rosa Perez, gave a official statement ten minutes ago. She said she heard your wife scratching at the bottom of the cellar stairs yesterday morning—after Dr. Thorne had already left the estate with the signed death warrant.”
