Chapter 8: The Pre-Trial Maneuvers

The criminal court building was swarming with reporters, news vans, and flashing cameras as Victor Vance was escorted up the granite steps in handcuffs and leg irons. The story of the "Coffin Heiress" had captured national media attention, turning the upcoming murder trial into the most anticipated legal battle of the decade.

Inside courtroom 402, Arthur Sterling, Victor’s veteran defense attorney, paced before Judge Eleanor Vance (no relation).

"Your Honor," Sterling argued loudly, gesturing toward the gallery filled with journalists. "My client is being lynched by public opinion. The media has painted Mr. Vance as a monster based on the uncorroborated statements of a traumatized woman who suffered severe brain hypoxia and a maid who committed grand destruction of property at a private funeral!"

District Attorney Sarah Chen stood up calmly from the prosecution table. "Your Honor, the defense is attempting to distract from the hard physical evidence. We have three empty vials of tetrodotoxin bearing Mr. Vance's fingerprints recovered from his safe. We have financial records showing he was quietly liquidating Mrs. Vance’s commercial real estate holdings into offshore accounts. And we have wire transfers linking Mr. Vance directly to Dr. Thorne hours before the alleged 'death'."

"Dr. Thorne made a tragic medical error!" Sterling countered smoothly. "My client relied on the expertise of a licensed physician. When Dr. Thorne declared her dead, my client was in a state of profound grief. Any actions he took regarding the funeral were done under the assumption that his beloved wife had passed away from her pre-existing heart condition!"

In the front row of the gallery, sitting between Detective Marcus and Rosa, Emily watched her husband. Victor sat at the defense table, immaculate in a gray jail-issued suit, avoiding her gaze entirely. He looked calm, poised, and utterly convinced that his wealth and influence would shield him from accountability.

Judge Eleanor knocked her gavel once. "The defense's motion to dismiss the charges based on insufficient evidence is denied. The motion to revoke bail is granted. The defendant will remain in custody at the county facility until trial begins. We commence jury selection on Monday."

Victor’s lawyer turned to whisper in his ear, but Victor’s eyes finally drifted toward the gallery, catching Emily’s cold, unwavering glare. For the first time since his arrest, a flicker of genuine uncertainty crossed his face.
