Chapter 3 - THE SON THEY ERASED

No one spoke for several seconds.

Rain struck the lodge windows while the frozen face on the television stared back at Adrian.

He had lived forty-two years believing he was Margaret’s only son.

“You never told me.”

Margaret’s eyes closed.

“Charles took him.”

“When?”

“The day you were born.”

Dr. Grant moved toward the door.

Detective Ortiz stopped him.

“You seem uncomfortable, Doctor.”

“This is a family delusion created by medication.”

Margaret looked at him with sudden clarity.

“You drugged me because I remembered Nathan.”

The name changed Adrian’s breathing.

“Nathan?”

“My second son.”

Margaret explained in broken sentences.

She had delivered identical twins at a private Bennett clinic. Adrian was healthy. Nathan suffered temporary breathing problems and was taken to another room.

Charles returned hours later and told her the second baby had died.

Margaret demanded to see him.

Charles showed her a sealed infant casket.

“He would not let me touch you both,” she whispered. “He said grief was making me dangerous.”

Years later, Margaret found a payment record to a private boarding facility in Switzerland.

The beneficiary’s initials were N.B.

When she confronted Charles, he struck her and destroyed the records.

“I believed Nathan lived,” she said. “But Charles threatened to take you too.”

Adrian stood slowly.

His entire childhood rearranged itself.

His father’s obsession with discipline.

The repeated biometric testing.

The years Charles insisted Adrian attend private medical examinations without Margaret.

Charles had not merely measured Adrian.

He had been comparing two sons.

Vanessa looked toward the television.

“Nathan was raised to replace you.”

Adrian turned on her.

“You knew.”

“Only after I married you.”

“You used him to forge my signature.”

“I did not create him.”

“You helped him steal my identity.”

Dr. Grant stepped forward.

“Nathan Bennett is a highly unstable man.”

“You treated him,” Ortiz said.

Grant said nothing.

Jonah searched Grant’s medical case and found two patient files.

One belonged to Margaret.

The second carried no name.

Only a code.

AB-2.

Inside were photographs of Nathan throughout adulthood.

Facial reconstruction procedures.

Voice training.

Dental alterations.

Posture analysis.

Charles had spent decades turning Nathan into Adrian’s physical duplicate.

A note from Grant appeared on the final page.

SUBJECT CAN PASS FAMILY BIOMETRIC CHECKS. EMOTIONAL RESPONSE REMAINS AGGRESSIVE WHEN MOTHER IS DISCUSSED.

Margaret saw the words.

“He thinks I abandoned him.”

Vanessa looked at her coldly.

“Charles told him Adrian was the child you chose.”

“I chose neither. One was stolen.”

Detective Ortiz ordered Dr. Grant arrested for medical fraud and suspected abuse.

One of the deputies hesitated.

Grant reached toward his coat.

Jonah forced him against the wall before he could retrieve a hidden phone.

The device was already connected to the lodge’s security network.

A countdown appeared.

REMOTE PURGE — 02:00

Someone was erasing the lodge recordings.

Jonah rushed toward the server room.

Adrian remained with Margaret.

Vanessa watched the door.

“You will need me.”

“For what?”

“To find Nathan.”

“You helped create this.”

“And I know how Charles communicates with him.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“You will speak to Detective Ortiz.”

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“If I speak, Charles releases the video.”

“What video?”

“The original footage from your father’s funeral.”

Adrian remembered the closed casket and the ocean memorial.

“What does it show?”

“That your mother knew the coffin was empty.”

Adrian looked toward Margaret.

She did not deny it.

“I knew Charles survived the aircraft crash,” she said.

The admission struck almost as hard as the twin revelation.

“He called me three days later.”

“You let us bury him.”

“He threatened Nathan.”

“You knew Nathan was alive?”

“I knew Charles had someone. I did not know where.”

Margaret explained that Charles demanded her silence. In return, he promised neither son would be harmed.

She believed him because she was frightened.

Within six months, Charles stopped contacting her.

Margaret assumed he had died from injuries.

“But you never told me.”

“I wanted you free of him.”

“Instead, he spent twelve years controlling us from the shadows.”

Jonah’s voice came through Adrian’s earpiece.

“The server purge failed. I isolated the archive.”

A hidden video appeared on the television.

It showed Samuel Price entering the rehabilitation suite three nights earlier.

He carried blank legal documents.

Vanessa placed Margaret’s sedated hand against a signature pad.

Dr. Grant adjusted the dosage.

Then Nathan entered.

He looked exactly like Adrian.

Margaret, barely conscious, reached toward him.

“Adrian?”

Nathan leaned close.

“No, Mother. I’m the son you buried.”

He guided her hand across the final transfer.

The document granted Nathan emergency control of Bennett Holdings if Adrian died.

Margaret began crying as she watched.

Adrian’s fury became almost silent.

The recording continued.

Vanessa asked, “When does Charles arrive?”

Nathan answered in Adrian’s voice.

“He is already inside the lodge.”

Everyone turned toward the ceiling.

Jonah searched the estate map.

A hidden level appeared beneath the rehabilitation wing—an old wartime shelter removed from modern plans.

The access door was behind Margaret’s bed.

Adrian pulled the bed away.

A narrow steel panel stood in the wall.

It opened from the other side.

Cold air entered the suite.

Fresh wheelchair tracks marked the concrete passage beyond it.

Ortiz looked toward Margaret’s bed.

The chair beside it was gone.

Then the lights went out.

Margaret screamed.

When the emergency power returned, her bed was empty.

The navy blanket lay on the floor.

And Vanessa had disappeared with her.
