Chapter 9 - THE SISTER WHO BUILT THE PRISON

Beatrice Bennett had never died.
She had created a false medical record and disappeared after Charles attempted to remove her from the insurance division.
But she did not oppose the duplicate-heir program.
She designed it.
Charles controlled the sons.
Beatrice controlled the legal identities.
Together, they built a system capable of replacing executives, patients, witnesses, and heirs.
Later, the siblings turned against each other.
Charles wanted absolute control.
Beatrice wanted the Bennett empire destroyed after transferring its most valuable assets to Charlotte.
“You raised me,” Charlotte said from the witness stand.
Beatrice looked at her.
“I rescued you.”
“You taught me Mother rejected me.”
“She chose Charles every day she remained beside him.”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
The accusation contained enough truth to hurt.
But Beatrice had used that pain exactly as Charles did.
Adrian’s phone displayed the live lodge feed.
Fire spread through the rehabilitation wing.
Maria’s last known location was the old medical suite.
Jonah Reed had remained at the lodge to secure evidence. He was also missing.
Beatrice held the remote control above her head.
“If I am arrested, the underground oxygen lines ignite.”
Detective Ortiz slowly moved away from her weapon.
“What do you want?”
“Charlotte leaves with me.”
Charlotte stared at the woman who raised her.
“No.”
Beatrice’s confidence cracked.
“You do not understand these people.”
“I understand that you kept me angry because anger made me obedient.”
“I gave you an education and a company.”
“You gave me Charles’s version of my mother.”
Beatrice pressed the remote.
A second explosion shook the lodge feed.
Adrian moved toward the courtroom exit.
Ortiz stopped him.
“Fire crews are blocked by the security gates.”
“I know the mountain access codes.”
“You are a witness under federal protection.”
“Maria saved my mother.”
Nathan stepped beside him.
“I know the underground entrance.”
The brothers left with federal agents.
Claire remained with Margaret and Charlotte.
At the lodge, smoke covered the mountain road.
Adrian and Nathan entered through the service tunnel beneath the old greenhouse.
Inside, flames had reached the rehabilitation suite.
They found Jonah unconscious near the server room.
Nathan carried him toward the tunnel.
Adrian reached Margaret’s former room.
Maria lay beside the broken door with one ankle trapped beneath a fallen beam.
He lifted the burning wood with a metal rail and pulled her free.
She coughed against his coat.
“Evidence room.”
“The evidence does not matter.”
“There are patients’ names.”
“The servers were copied.”
Maria shook her head.
“Original handwritten ledger.”
Beatrice intended to destroy the only record connecting certain living victims to stolen settlements.
Adrian entered the smoke-filled archive.
Nathan followed.
Together, they recovered the ledger inside a fireproof case.
The ceiling collapsed behind them as they reached the tunnel.
At the courthouse, Charlotte moved toward Beatrice.
“I will go with you if you release the controls.”
Margaret caught her hand.
“You do not owe your life to another person’s revenge.”
Charlotte looked at her mother.
It was the first time Margaret had touched her.
Beatrice watched them.
“You believe one conversation makes her a mother?”
“No,” Charlotte said. “But choosing for myself makes me free.”
Federal technicians interrupted the remote signal.
Detective Ortiz seized Beatrice.
The lodge oxygen system shut down before the final detonation.
Beatrice was arrested.
Charles finally looked defeated.
The trials lasted eight months.
Charles received multiple life sentences for kidnapping, attempted murder, elder abuse, insurance fraud, medical conspiracy, and obstruction.
Beatrice received the same.
Samuel Price—Thomas Bennett—testified against both siblings in exchange for avoiding the death penalty in Adam’s murder case.
Dr. Grant lost his medical license and received a lengthy federal sentence.
Vanessa pleaded guilty.
During sentencing, she faced Margaret.
“I called you senile because I needed everyone to believe your truth was confusion.”
Margaret said nothing.
Vanessa turned toward Adrian.
“I believed Charles would make me powerful.”
“You were powerful every time you chose whether to hurt someone,” Adrian replied. “You chose harm.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
The judge sentenced her to prison and ordered every personal asset transferred into the patient fund.
Nathan entered a rehabilitation and witness-protection program.
He refused Adrian’s offer to live at the estate.
“I need to discover what my face looks like when I am not trying to be you.”
Adrian understood.
Charlotte became co-director of the restitution trust with Claire.
Margaret began physical recovery at a public hospital, refusing private isolation.
Adrian visited daily.
One evening, she handed him the hidden phone.
“I recorded one file before Vanessa found me.”
The file had no date.
Adrian pressed play.
Margaret’s younger voice filled the room.
She was speaking to Charles decades earlier.
“You will not use my children.”
Charles answered.
“They were born for continuity.”
Then a third voice entered.
A man Adrian did not recognize.
“You promised one son to my family.”
Adrian looked toward Margaret.
“Who is that?”
Her face became pale.
“I never heard him before.”
The recording continued.
Charles said, “The fourth child is already prepared.”
Adrian stared at the phone.
“The fourth child?”
Margaret shook her head.
“I thought Alexander was only a surgical duplicate.”
A photograph appeared in the hidden file.
It showed Alexander as a newborn beside Margaret’s hospital identification card.
Alexander had not merely been selected to look like Adrian.
May you like
He was another Bennett child.
And according to the final document, Charles had promised him to a family whose name had been hidden behind the international insurance seal.
