Chapter 6 - THE THIRD SON

The dead man’s name was Adam Bennett.
At least, that was the name printed on the private medical file recovered from the morgue.
His fingerprints matched Adrian’s archived childhood records closely enough to trigger the insurance verification. His face had undergone the same reconstruction as Nathan’s, though the procedures were older.
Charles had raised two hidden sons.
Nathan was trained to replace Adrian publicly.
Adam had been used for riskier tasks—signatures, surveillance, and eventually a body.
Margaret stared at Adam’s photograph for a long time.
“I never saw him.”
Nathan sat in a secured lodge conference room with Detective Ortiz and federal agents.
He looked at the dead brother he had not known existed.
“Father told me I was the only one taken.”
Adrian studied him.
“Charles lied to both of us.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“He told me you grew up loved while I lived inside institutions. He never mentioned another child living somewhere worse.”
Medical records showed Adam spent most of his life inside Bennett rehabilitation facilities under changing names.
He had been conditioned to imitate Adrian but never allowed outside without supervision.
The insurance company accepted his body because Vanessa identified him as Adrian.
“She knew?” Adrian asked.
Nathan looked toward the floor.
“She knew there were two of us.”
Adrian’s anger became sharp again.
Vanessa had stood inside the boardroom pretending to mourn while knowingly using a dead man as her husband’s body.
Detective Ortiz called Claire.
Vanessa had been detained inside Bennett Headquarters, but Samuel Price escaped during a fire alarm triggered from the building’s old service network.
Claire froze all corporate accounts.
The markets had already reacted.
Bennett Holdings lost thirty percent of its value before noon.
Thousands of employees feared the company would collapse.
Adrian returned to the city with Margaret, Nathan, and federal protection.
Reporters surrounded the headquarters.
Questions struck from every direction.
“Are you the real Adrian Bennett?”
“Did your family conduct illegal medical experiments?”
“Was your wife involved in your attempted murder?”
“Is Charles Bennett alive?”
Adrian entered without answering.
In the boardroom, Vanessa sat between two investigators.
She no longer wore diamonds.
Her hands rested on the table.
Adrian placed Adam’s morgue photograph before her.
“You identified him as me.”
Vanessa looked away.
“You knew he was not.”
“Charles said the body would only delay the board.”
“You allowed a man with my face to be buried under my name.”
“He was already dead.”
“How?”
Vanessa’s silence answered.
Adrian leaned closer.
“How did Adam die?”
“Nathaniel—”
She stopped.
“Who is Nathaniel?”
Nathan watched from behind the observation glass.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Samuel Price’s real name is Nathaniel Bennett.”
Margaret’s head lifted.
Adrian turned toward her.
“Another relative?”
Margaret’s voice shook.
“Charles’s younger brother.”
The man buried in Charles’s empty coffin had supposedly been Thomas Bennett, Charles’s brother.
Now Vanessa claimed Samuel Price was that brother under another identity.
Margaret explained that Thomas Bennett disappeared after accusing Charles of stealing medical patents.
Charles told the family Thomas died overseas.
Instead, Thomas changed his name and became the Bennett attorney.
“Why work for the brother who erased him?” Claire asked.
Vanessa answered.
“Because they built the program together.”
Charles controlled the companies.
Thomas—Samuel—controlled the law.
Dr. Grant controlled the medicine.
Together, they created heirs, doubles, false patients, and legal identities.
Adam had learned too much.
Samuel poisoned him and used the body to activate Adrian’s insurance policy.
Adrian looked toward Detective Ortiz.
“Charge her.”
Vanessa’s panic finally surfaced.
“I can find Charles.”
“You could have stopped him before my mother was drugged.”
“He would have killed me.”
“You told Margaret she would not live long enough to challenge you.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I became what he needed me to become.”
“No. You became what benefited you.”
Federal agents removed her.
Before leaving, she looked toward Nathan.
“Charles never intended either of you to inherit.”
Nathan’s face remained still.
“He planned to activate the Bennett Founder Trust using all three sons’ identities. Adam’s death supplied the first. Adrian’s insurance supplied the second. Your signature inside the mountain supplied the third.”
Adrian looked toward the archive documents.
“What does the Founder Trust contain?”
“Everything Charles hid before his supposed death.”
“Money?”
“Money, patents, political accounts, and ownership of every rehabilitation company.”
“Where is it?”
Vanessa looked toward Margaret.
“She knows.”
Margaret shook her head.
Vanessa smiled weakly.
“The first Mrs. Bennett created the trust with Charles.”
Margaret gripped the table.
“I created a patient-protection trust before I understood what Charles was doing.”
“The protection clause became the key,” Vanessa said. “Only Margaret can release it.”
Adrian realized Charles still needed his mother.
The kidnapping attempt had not ended.
That night, Margaret was moved to a secured hospital floor.
Jonah placed guards at every entrance.
Adrian slept in the chair beside her bed.
At 2:13 a.m., the heart monitor alarm sounded.
Adrian awakened.
Margaret was gone.
Her blanket had been arranged to resemble a sleeping body.
The window remained sealed.
The guards outside remembered seeing Adrian enter the room twenty minutes earlier and wheel Margaret toward imaging.
Adrian had never left the chair.
Security footage showed a man with his face pushing Margaret’s wheelchair into the elevator.
Nathan remained locked inside federal custody.
Adam was dead.
Adrian stared at the recording.

There was a fourth man wearing his identity.
And this one looked directly into the camera before smiling.
