Chapter 5 - THE WIDOW WHOSE HUSBAND WAS STILL ALIVE

Vanessa stood before the Bennett Holdings board wearing the same burgundy jumpsuit.
She had changed her shoes and covered the bruise on her wrist with a silk scarf.
Television cameras recorded the emergency meeting.
“Our family has suffered an unimaginable tragedy,” she said.
Behind her, a screen displayed footage of Adrian’s empty vehicle near a collapsed section of mountain road.
The vehicle was real.
Adrian had left it at the private airfield before taking a security car to the lodge.
Charles’s people moved it and staged the crash.
Search teams were already being directed toward the wrong valley.
Vanessa lowered her eyes as if fighting tears.
“My husband’s final concern was the stability of Bennett Holdings and the care of his mother.”
Beneath the mountain, Adrian watched the broadcast with cold disbelief.
Nathan stood beside him, blood running from a cut near his temple.
Margaret remained in her wheelchair.
Charles leaned against the archive table, breathing heavily after the struggle.
“You chose her well,” Adrian said.
Charles smiled.
“She understands survival.”
“She thinks you will let her keep the company.”
“She understands temporary usefulness.”
The answer reached Nathan too.
Charles had never planned to reward anyone.
Only to use them until they became dangerous.
The archive chamber was sealed, but Margaret’s hidden phone remained connected to the lodge’s emergency network.
Adrian sent Jonah their location.
The shutters would take several minutes to cut through.
On the boardroom screen, Samuel Price presented Adrian’s forged emergency proxy.
Nathan’s biometric signature appeared beneath it.
The directors hesitated.
Claire Bennett, Adrian’s younger sister and chief financial officer, sat at the end of the table.
She had returned from Singapore after hearing Adrian was missing.
Claire studied the signature.
“This agreement was never presented to the board.”
Samuel answered smoothly.
“It was executed privately because Adrian feared his mother’s declining condition would create instability.”
Claire looked toward Vanessa.
“My brother never trusted private succession agreements.”
“Grief changed him.”
“Our father’s death happened twelve years ago.”
Vanessa’s mouth tightened.
“He recently learned new information about Charles.”
Claire noticed.
“What information?”
Samuel interrupted.
“The board must vote before the markets open.”
Beneath the mountain, Adrian opened Margaret’s phone and called Claire.
The signal passed through the emergency network.
She answered without showing surprise.
“Who is this?”
“Your brother.”
Claire stood so quickly that her chair struck the floor.
Every director turned.
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
“Adrian?”
“I am alive.”
Samuel reached for Claire’s phone.
She stepped away.
“Where are you?”
“Inside Father’s underground medical facility beneath the lodge.”
The boardroom became silent.
Vanessa recovered first.
“That is not Adrian. Charles created a duplicate.”
Claire looked toward the directors.
Adrian realized how impossible the situation sounded.
Nathan stood beside him wearing the same face.
Either man could claim to be the real son.
“Claire,” Adrian said, “when you were twelve, you broke Mother’s sapphire bracelet and hid the stones inside the greenhouse fountain.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Only Adrian knew.
He had helped her recover them before Margaret noticed.
“It’s him,” Claire whispered.
Vanessa pointed toward the phone.
“A memory can be stolen.”
Adrian continued.
“Father is alive. Vanessa, Samuel, Grant, and a man raised as my twin have forged the transfer.”
Claire looked toward Samuel.
“You knew Charles survived.”
Samuel stepped backward.
Security guards moved toward him.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
Nathan appeared on the main screen.
A live feed from another camera inside the archive showed him standing beside Adrian.
The directors stared at two identical men.
Vanessa smiled.
“You see? No one knows which one is real.”
Charles reached toward the archive controls.
Nathan stopped him.
Adrian sent Claire the server key from Margaret’s phone.
“Open the medical records.”
Claire entered it into the board system.
The first files appeared.
Sedated executives.
Forged guardianship orders.
Secret insurance policies.
Payments to Dr. Grant and Samuel.
The board erupted.
Samuel attempted to leave.
Corporate security detained him.
Vanessa approached the control console and disconnected the presentation.
Claire blocked her.
“You assaulted Mother.”
“I protected her.”
“You declared Adrian dead while he was speaking to us.”
Vanessa’s confidence disappeared.
The directors suspended the emergency vote.
But Charles laughed inside the archive chamber.
“You delayed one meeting.”
He touched the silver cane against a hidden sensor.
The archive floor opened beneath a cabinet.
A second exit appeared.
Charles stepped backward into the passage.
Nathan caught his sleeve.
Charles drove the cane into Nathan’s ribs and disappeared.
Adrian followed, but the hidden door sealed.
Jonah’s team finally cut through the main shutters.
Federal officers entered.
Margaret was safe.
Nathan surrendered.
Adrian ordered Charles’s face distributed to every agency.
Then Claire called again.
“The board restored your authority, but there is a problem.”
“What?”
“The insurance company has accepted the claim of your death.”
“I am speaking to you.”
“They received biometric confirmation from a hospital morgue.”
Adrian looked toward Nathan.
Nathan shook his head.
He had been inside the mountain.
Someone else had provided the match.
Claire opened the morgue photograph.
The dead man looked exactly like Adrian and Nathan.
Margaret saw the image and began sobbing.
Adrian turned toward her.
“You said there were twins.”
She covered her mouth.
“I thought there were.”
The birth record loaded beside the corpse.
Three infant identification numbers appeared.
Adrian stared at them.
Margaret had not delivered twins.
May you like
She had delivered triplets.
And the third Bennett son had just been found dead carrying Adrian’s identity.
