Chapter 4 - THE HOSPITAL BENEATH THE MOUNTAIN

Adrian entered the hidden passage before Detective Ortiz could stop him.

Jonah followed with two security officers.

The tunnel descended beneath the lodge in a series of concrete ramps wide enough for hospital beds. Old medical symbols marked the walls, but the dust had been disturbed recently.

Someone had maintained the underground facility.

Adrian found Margaret’s wool slipper near the first junction.

He picked it up.

A speaker activated overhead.

Charles’s voice filled the tunnel.

“You always run before you think.”

“Release her.”

“Your mother belongs where her mind can no longer damage this family.”

“She recorded your crimes.”

“She recorded the treatment of a confused woman.”

Adrian continued descending.

“You forged a life insurance policy on me.”

“I insured an asset.”

“I am your son.”

“You are one of them.”

The words confirmed what Margaret had revealed.

Charles never saw Adrian or Nathan as children.

He saw interchangeable heirs.

The tunnel opened into an underground rehabilitation ward.

Rows of glass rooms lined both sides of the corridor.

Inside were elderly men and women wearing patient clothing.

Some were awake.

Others stared blankly beneath heavy medication.

Adrian recognized several faces.

Former Bennett Holdings executives.

A retired judge.

The accountant who once accused Charles of hiding medical research funds.

All had supposedly entered private care after developing sudden cognitive decline.

Jonah stared through the glass.

“This is not a rehabilitation center.”

“It’s a prison,” Adrian said.

A woman struck weakly against one window.

Adrian approached.

She was Evelyn Moore, the former chief auditor who disappeared eight years earlier.

She wrote two words in the condensation.

FORGED CONSENT.

The underground facility had been used to drug witnesses and transfer their assets.

Charles had perfected the same method on strangers before using it against Margaret.

A door opened at the end of the ward.

Nathan stood beneath the light wearing Adrian’s clothes.

The resemblance was so exact that Jonah’s officers hesitated.

Nathan held Margaret’s wheelchair.

Vanessa stood beside him.

Margaret’s head rested against the navy blanket, but her eyes remained open.

Adrian moved forward.

“Let her go.”

Nathan smiled.

“You sound like me.”

“You sound like a man who spent his life practicing.”

The smile vanished.

“Father said you would be arrogant.”

“Father kept you hidden and used your face.”

“He protected me from a mother who chose the healthy child.”

Margaret lifted her head.

“I never chose.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“You signed my death certificate.”

“Charles forced my hand.”

“You continued living in his house.”

“To protect Adrian.”

The words wounded Nathan exactly as Charles intended.

Adrian saw it.

“Nathan, he built your hatred because it made you useful.”

“You inherited everything.”

“You inherited his prison.”

Vanessa gripped the wheelchair handles.

“We do not have time for family therapy. Charles needs Margaret’s conscious authorization.”

“For what?” Adrian asked.

Nathan pointed toward a sealed chamber behind him.

Inside stood the original Bennett Continuity Archive.

Physical share certificates.

Insurance ledgers.

Trust documents.

Recorded confessions.

Margaret’s “golden vote” controlled Bennett Holdings and every medical company attached to it.

Charles could not reclaim those assets while she remained competent and refused to sign.

That was why Vanessa and Grant manufactured dementia.

That was why Nathan copied Adrian’s identity.

And that was why the insurance policy existed.

If Adrian died, Vanessa would become interim chair.

Nathan, appearing as Adrian, could later “return” and take permanent control.

Adrian understood the full plan.

“You were going to kill me and replace me.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“I was going to take back the life stolen from me.”

“You cannot take a childhood by stealing someone else’s adulthood.”

Charles’s voice entered from behind the archive door.

“Enough.”

He stepped into the ward.

Adrian had imagined this moment since seeing the photograph.

Nothing prepared him for the reality.

Charles Bennett looked older, but not weak. He wore a black suit and carried a silver cane. A small oxygen device rested beneath his collar.

Margaret stared at the husband who had tormented her for decades.

“You should have died in that ocean.”

Charles smiled.

“So should several people in these rooms.”

Detective Ortiz’s voice whispered through Adrian’s earpiece.

She and federal officers had entered the tunnel from a second access point.

Adrian needed time.

He faced his father.

“Why come back now?”

“Because you are selling the rehabilitation division.”

Adrian had planned to close several private clinics after discovering irregular billing.

Those clinics financed Charles’s hidden network.

“If the sale continued,” Charles said, “auditors would find the underground accounts.”

“So you decided to kill me.”

“I decided to restore competent leadership.”

Margaret’s weak voice crossed the ward.

“You were never competent. Only cruel.”

Charles approached her.

“You signed the first facilities into existence.”

“I believed they would help people.”

“You accepted the profits.”

“And I will spend the rest of my life returning them.”

Charles’s face hardened.

“You do not have a life outside my name.”

He opened the archive chamber.

A camera and biometric pad waited inside.

“Margaret will transfer the golden vote to Nathan.”

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“And the insurance policy?”

She avoided his eyes.

Charles answered.

“The mountain road has an unstable section. Your vehicle would have suffered a tragic failure.”

Adrian’s hands closed into fists.

Vanessa whispered, “I told him not to involve anyone else.”

“You signed the beneficiary form.”

“I thought Charles would only force you out of the company.”

“You told my mother she would not live long enough to challenge you.”

Vanessa had no answer.

Federal officers moved into position behind the ward walls.

Charles placed Margaret’s hand near the biometric pad.

Nathan watched Adrian.

For the first time, uncertainty appeared in his expression.

“Father,” Nathan said, “you promised no one would die after Adrian surrendered.”

Charles looked at him with contempt.

“And you believed that?”

Nathan’s face changed.

Charles had never intended to give him Adrian’s life.

Only Adrian’s face.

Once the transfer was complete, Nathan would become another witness.

Margaret suddenly pressed the hidden phone beneath her blanket.

An alarm screamed through the archive.

Every glass patient-room door unlocked.

Federal officers breached the ward.

Chaos erupted.

Jonah pulled Margaret’s wheelchair away.

Ortiz arrested Dr. Grant’s underground staff.

Vanessa ran toward a service elevator.

Nathan blocked Charles from reaching Margaret.

Charles struck him with the silver cane.

Adrian tackled his father against the archive table.

Charles activated a hidden switch.

Steel shutters dropped between the ward and the archive.

Adrian, Nathan, Margaret, and Charles were trapped inside.

A wall screen activated.

The Bennett Holdings boardroom appeared live.

Samuel Price stood before the directors.

Behind him was a photograph of Adrian’s damaged vehicle on a mountain road.

Samuel addressed the board.

“Mr. Adrian Bennett is missing and presumed dead.”

Vanessa entered the boardroom through a side door.

She had escaped the lodge through the service elevator.

Samuel continued.

“Under the emergency succession agreement, Vanessa Bennett is now interim chair.”

Margaret stared at the screen.

May you like

Charles smiled.

Even trapped beneath the mountain, his takeover had already begun.
