Chapter 10 - The New BlueprintIn mid-January, the trial of Derek Vance concluded before a full jury. Facing overwhelming digital and financial evidence, Derek entered a formal guilty plea to two counts of felony wire fraud and grand larceny, receiving a seven-year sentence at a state correctional facility without early parole eligibility.
On the Monday following the sentencing, I stood at the head of the conference table inside Weber Engineering's corporate headquarters.
Surrounding the table were my senior project managers, engineers, and financial advisors. Sitting in the junior analyst's chair at the far end of the table was Joselyn.
She had applied for an entry-level communications assistant position at Weber Engineering through the standard corporate portal three weeks ago, undergoing four rounds of interviews with my department heads without my intervention. She had earned her chair.
"Team," I announced, tapping my tablet to bring up the master blueprint on the wall monitor. "Weber Engineering has officially been awarded the primary structural contract for the new St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital Expansion Project."
The room erupted into enthusiastic applause.
I looked down the table at Joselyn, who was taking neat, rapid notes on her tablet, her face lit with a bright, professional focus. She looked up, caught my eye, and offered a subtle, confident nod.
After the meeting adjourned, the staff filed out, leaving the two of us alone in the sunlit conference room.
I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the sprawling city skyline below.
Joselyn walked up beside me, holding her leather notebook.
"It's a big project, CEO," Joselyn said with a light, warm smile.
"It is," I agreed, looking at her reflection in the glass beside mine. "And every single line on those blueprints is built to last."

She reached out, gently linking her arm through mine, standing tall beside me as the winter sun broke through the clouds, illuminating the city in brilliant gold.
We had built something unbroken out of the ruins of the past—a life of integrity, strength, and an unshakeable love that no shadow would ever touch again.
