Chapter 16 - The Expansion

Three years after the opening of the Community Engineering Center, Weber Engineering had expanded into three neighboring states, securing its position as one of the premier structural engineering firms in the Midwest.

The firm’s success was no longer driven solely by Frances’s formidable reputation. Joselyn had stepped into the role of Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Public Affairs, earning the position after successfully negotiating a $45 million municipal infrastructure partnership with the city of Chicago.

On a warm June afternoon, Frances sat in her glass-walled corner office, watching Joselyn lead a board meeting in the central conference room.

Through the glass, Frances saw her daughter speaking with calm, magnetic authority. Surrounded by senior engineers, city planners, and venture capitalists, Joselyn commanded the room effortlessly—not with loud posturing, but with rock-solid data, clear ethics, and genuine vision.

A knock at the door broke Frances’s reflection.

Sandra Okafor walked in, carrying a thin blue folder. Her expression was relaxed, carrying none of the urgent tension that had marked their meetings four years ago.

"Final audit reports for the Q2 expansion, Frances," Sandra said, setting the folder on the mahogany desk. "Clean balance sheets across all three regional offices. Zero debt liability."

"Thank you, Sandra," Frances smiled, leaning back in her chair. "And the Vance restitution account?"

"Fully settled six months ago," Sandra replied. "Joselyn's personal savings account has been entirely restored, and the remaining trust funds were donated to the St. Jude's Legal Defense Fund, exactly as she requested."

Sandra turned her gaze toward the conference room, where the board members were standing up to shake Joselyn’s hand.

"She turned into quite a force, Frances," Sandra remarked quietly. "You built a true successor."

Frances looked at her daughter, feeling a quiet, luminous warmth fill her chest. "I didn't build her, Sandra. She rebuilt herself. I just held the space until she realized who she was."
