Chapter 8 - The Asset LiquidationBy mid-December, the civil forfeiture proceedings against Vance Capital Holdings LLC reached their final stage.

I sat in Sandra Okafor's office alongside a court-appointed receiver, reviewing the master inventory of seized assets.

"The Marina District condo was sold at public auction on Thursday," Sandra reported, sliding a certified check across the glass desk. "After satisfying the primary lender's mortgage claim, the remaining equity generated $142,000. Per the court's restitution order, every single dollar has been deposited back into your corporate account to cover the loan acceleration costs."

"And the remaining accounts?" I asked.

"Derek's personal vehicle, his luxury watches, and his private equity shares were liquidated yesterday," Sandra added. "We recovered $28,000 of the $30,000 he took from Joselyn's personal savings account. I have the cashier's check ready for her signature."

I picked up the cashier's check made out to Joselyn Weber.

"Don't give it to her all at once, Sandra," I said thoughtfully.

Sandra raised an eyebrow. "Are you holding it back?"

"No," I smiled softly. "I want her to receive it as a matching contribution. Every dollar she earns and deposits into her savings account from her copywriting work, the trust matches it until the $28,000 is fully restored. She needs to know that recovery is a process she earns, not a lump-sum payout."

Sandra let out a slow, appreciative laugh, nodding her head. "Frances, you are an extraordinary mother. A tough one, but an extraordinary one."

"She's learning resilience, Sandra," I said, looking out the window at the snow beginning to fall over the city skyline. "It's the only gift that actually lasts."
