Chapter 14 - The Financial SiegeMark did not wait for thirty days.

True to his word in the courtroom, he launched a swift, ruthless financial counter-offensive against Arthur Vance.
Working through Eleanor Vance and a specialized corporate acquisition firm, Mark identified the three major bank loans securing Arthur’s hedge fund—Vance Capital Management. The fund was heavily over-leveraged, relying on short-term credit lines to cover massive losses in the commercial real estate sector.
Over forty-eight hours, Mark used his liquid capital reserves to purchase thirty-five million dollars of Vance Capital’s distressed debt directly from the primary lending institutions.
On Monday morning, Arthur Vance walked into his opulent office on Boylston Street to find his senior partners sitting around the boardroom table, surrounded by three corporate auditors from Mercer Development.
Mark sat at the head of the conference table, sipping black coffee from a simple ceramic mug.
Arthur froze in the doorway, his leather briefcase dropping from his trembling fingers. "What... what is this? What are you doing in my office?!"
"This isn't your office anymore, Arthur," Mark said calmly, setting his mug down. "As of eight o'clock this morning, Mercer Holdings acquired eighty percent of your fund's outstanding debt obligations. You defaulted on your liquidity ratio requirements at midnight."
Arthur’s face turned completely white. "You... you bought my debt?"
"Every cent of it," Mark replied smoothly. "And under the terms of the credit agreement, as the primary noteholder, I am foreclosing on Vance Capital Management. Your assets are being liquidated to satisfy creditor obligations, your lease on this floor is terminated, and your trading license is suspended pending SEC review."
Arthur stumbled backward against the doorframe, gasping for air as if he had been struck in the chest with an iron bar. "You're destroying me... over a probate motion?!"
Mark stood up slowly, picking up his leather jacket from the back of his chair. He walked toward Arthur, stopping just inches away, looking down at the broken old man with absolute clarity.

"I warned you two years ago, Arthur," Mark said softly. "I told you that if you tried to use your money to hurt my daughter, I would use mine to destroy you. You thought I was making a speech. I was giving you a promise."
Mark stepped past him into the hallway, pausing for a brief second without looking back. "The movers will be here at noon to pack your personal belongings. Have a good day, Arthur."
