Chapter 3 - The Vultures ArriveThe morning sun rose cold and gray over the city of Boston, matching the mood inside the high-rise conference room of Mercer Development Corporation.

Mark sat at the head of the long glass table, wearing a crisp dark gray suit. His eyes were shadowed with exhaustion—he hadn't slept a single minute during the night, spending every hour sitting beside Lily's bed, listening to her breathe, ensuring that every time she stirred, his hand was there for her to hold.
Across the table sat Arthur Vance—Victoria’s father—and a team of three slick corporate defense attorneys in tailored three-piece suits.
Arthur Vance was a wealthy hedge fund director with slicked-back white hair, a gold pinky ring, and an expression of arrogant entitlement that had been passed down directly to his daughter. He had not come to express concern for Lily; he had come to manage a corporate disaster.
"Mark, let’s be reasonable adults here," Arthur began, striking the glass table with his heavy palm. "Victoria made a mistake. A emotional, foolish lapse in judgment brought on by stress and adjusting to step-parenting. But putting a Vance behind bars over a family dispute? It's absurd."
Mark slowly raised his eyes from his coffee cup. He stared at his father-in-law with an icy, absolute quiet that made the three defense attorneys shift uncomfortably in their leather chairs.
"A lapse in judgment?" Mark repeated softly.
"She's young, Mark! She felt neglected!" Arthur snapped, waving his hand dismissively. "You threw her into a house where your dead wife's memory hangs over every room like a ghost! She snapped! Fortunately, the child is completely uninjured. No harm, no foul."
No harm, no foul.
The words hung in the air like poison.
Mark leaned forward, placing his forearms on the table. "Arthur, your daughter threw an eight-year-old child off a thirty-foot balcony. If I had been two seconds slower, my daughter would be in a body bag right now."
"But she isn't!" Arthur argued loudly. "You caught her! So let’s drop these ridiculous criminal charges. We can arrange a quiet, fast divorce. Victoria will renounce any claim to the estate, you give her a modest five-million-dollar settlement for her trouble, and we sweep this entire embarrassing circus under the rug before the newspapers pick it up."
The lead defense attorney cleared his throat, pushing a manila envelope across the glass. "Mr. Mercer, if this goes to trial, we will be forced to bring up your history of extreme paranoia regarding your daughter's safety since your first wife's death. We will argue that you misinterpreted a playful struggle near the stairs, and that your own aggressive tackle caused the child to fall."
Mark didn't touch the envelope. Instead, he turned his head toward the corner of the conference room where his own attorney, Eleanor Vance (no relation to Victoria), sat calmly with an iPad.
"Eleanor," Mark said calmly. "Play it."
Eleanor tapped the screen.
The massive wall-mounted monitor at the front of the room lit up in crisp 4K resolution.
The audio filled the room immediately—Victoria’s hysterical shrieks echoed from the speakers, followed by the terrifying sight of her grabbing Lily’s small shoulders and driving her weight forward with clear, unmistakable force. The video captured the absolute horror on Lily’s face, the precise moment her feet left the floor, and the desperate, heroic dive of Mark sliding across the marble floor to catch her.
The video paused on a crystal-clear frame: Victoria standing at the balcony railing, looking down with a cold, unbothered expression while the child fell.
The conference room went dead, terrifyingly silent.
Arthur Vance’s face turned from red to an ash-gray pale. The three defense attorneys stared at the screen, their rehearsed legal arguments completely dying in their throats. There was no spin. There was no "misinterpreted struggle." It was a clean, unambiguous recording of attempted murder.
Mark stood up slowly, buttoning his suit jacket.

"You have twenty-four hours to remove every piece of Victoria’s clothing and personal belongings from my house," Mark said, his voice flat and absolute. "If her legal team attempts to contact my daughter or step foot near my property again, I will release this raw video to every major news network on the East Coast."
He looked Arthur dead in the eyes. "Your daughter is going to prison, Arthur. And if you try to use your money to save her... I will use every cent of mine to destroy you."
