Chapter 8 - A Fortress Built for TwoSaturday morning arrived with crisp blue skies and the sharp scent of autumn pine in the air.

At the edge of the manicured lawn behind Oakridge Manor, near the massive oak tree overlooking the private lake, Mark stood in work boots, flannel shirt, and safety glasses. Beside him, Lily wore a miniature yellow hard hat and held a plastic measuring tape with total seriousness.

"Two feet to the left, Carpenter Lily," Mark instructed, holding a long cedar plank against the sturdy lower branch.

"Measuring... two feet exactly, Chief!" Lily announced, pressing the tape against the rough bark and drawing a pencil line with painstaking care.

For four hours, the sound of sawing wood and rhythmic hammering echoed across the backyard. For the first time in months, Mark felt the crushing weight in his chest loosen. Watching Lily carefully align a wooden peg and hit it with a small rubber mallet, her tongue pressed against her top lip in concentration, he saw the shadows of fear melting away.

As they took a break on the grass, sharing a thermos of hot cocoa, Lily looked up at the half-finished wooden platform built securely between the strong branches.

"Daddy?" she asked softly, tracing the rim of her paper cup.

"Yeah, bug?"

"Is Victoria ever coming back to get her shoes?"

Mark paused, looking down at her. "No, sweetheart. All her things were packed and picked up three weeks ago. Why do you ask?"

"I had a dream last night that she was standing in the closet near the front door," Lily whispered, her eyes lowering. "She was looking for her blue shirt."

Mark reached over, pulling her close into his side, wrapping his large arm around her narrow shoulders.

"Listen to me, Lily," Mark said, his voice deep and resonant with total truth. "This house belongs to you and me. Every lock on every door has been changed. We have security guards at the gate, cameras in every room, and David watching the yard. But more than that... you have me. And nobody—not Victoria, not her father, not anyone—will ever enter this property without my permission again."

Lily leaned her head against his flannel sleeve, letting out a long, quiet breath. "Okay, Daddy. Can we nail the railing on now?"

Mark smiled, standing up and reaching down his hand. "Let's build the strongest railing in the state."
