Chapter 7 - The Pressure TrapBy two o'clock that afternoon, Mark sat in the wood-paneled executive office of Eleanor Vance on the thirty-second floor of the Financial District tower.

Eleanor, a sharp-featured woman in her late fifties with silver-streaked hair and sharp steel-framed glasses, tossed a heavy legal filing onto the glass coffee table between them.

"Arthur isn't stupid, Mark," Eleanor said, pouring two glasses of sparkling water. "He knows the criminal case against Victoria is practically airtight with that foyer footage. So he’s shifting tactics. He’s using his clout on the board of the Oakridge Community Development Trust to freeze your pending commercial permits for the West End plaza project."

Mark took a slow sip of water, his posture remaining unyielding. "He’s trying to starve my business to force a civil settlement."

"Precisely," Eleanor replied. "If you sign a non-disclosure agreement and agree not to testify as an injured party in the sentencing phase—which could reduce Victoria’s mandatory minimum from twenty years down to five—Arthur will drop the injunctions and withdraw his legal motions."

Mark let out a cold, dry laugh that lacked any humor. "Five years? She tried to break my daughter’s neck, Eleanor. She sat on that balcony and watched her fall like she was watching an apple drop from a tree."

"I know," Eleanor said softly, her sharp tone softening with genuine empathy. "I'm just laying out the board for you. Arthur has fifty million dollars in hedge fund liquidity, and he’s willing to burn half of it to keep his daughter out of state prison. He’s also hired Julian Thorne."

Mark’s eyebrows lifted slightly. Julian Thorne was legendary in criminal defense circles—a silver-tongued courtroom veteran known for destroying witness credibility and manufacturing technicalities out of thin air.

"Thorne is already questioning the chain of custody on your security video," Eleanor warned. "He’s claiming the file was uploaded to a cloud server before police seized it, leaving room to argue potential digital alteration or frame editing."

Mark leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees. "The original hard drive is inside a fireproof safe in my office basement. It hasn't been touched since Detective Miller inspected it. Tell Thorne he can bring ten video forensic experts to examine the drive under police supervision. If they find a single altered pixel, I’ll hand Arthur the keys to my estate."

Eleanor smiled thinly, taking a note on her tablet. "I love working for you, Mark. You don't leave cracks."

"Not when it comes to Lily," Mark said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "Never when it comes to Lily."
