Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the HallwayThe Mercer estate felt vastly different in the days that followed.

Although the physical evidence of Victoria’s presence was systematically removed—her clothes packed into boxes, her portraits taken down from the walls—an invisible shadow hung over the grand hallways.
Lily refused to go near the second-floor balcony.
She spent her days glued to Mark’s side, holding his hand whenever they moved from room to room. When Mark worked in his office, Lily sat on the leather sofa beside him with her coloring books, constantly checking to make sure her father was still sitting in his chair.
At night, the nightmares came.
It was three o'clock in the morning when Mark woke to the sound of soft, muffled crying coming from down the hall.
He moved instantly, swinging his legs out of bed, putting on his robe, and walking quickly to Lily’s room.
The small nightlight cast a soft blue glow across the room. Lily was curled into a tiny ball in the center of her large bed, clutching her stuffed rabbit to her chest, her small body shaking violently with tears.
"Lily-bug," Mark whispered softly, kneeling beside her bed and laying his large, warm hand over her trembling back. "I'm here. Daddy's here."
Lily sat up immediately, throwing her small arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder. "I felt like I was falling again, Daddy," she sobbed into his collar. "Every time I close my eyes, I feel her hands pushing me."
Mark wrapped his arms tightly around her, lifting her off the bed and holding her close against his chest. He sat down in the rocking chair near the window, swaying gently back and forth as the rain began to patter softly against the glass outside.
"She can't hurt you anymore, Lily," Mark said gently, his hand stroking her soft hair. "She's locked away in a place where she can never, ever step foot near you again."
"Why did she hate me, Daddy?" Lily whimpered, her tiny voice breaking his heart into a thousand pieces. "Was it because I wore Mommy's dress? Was I bad?"
Mark pulled back slightly, looking directly into her tear-filled hazel eyes, his expression solemn and fiercely absolute.
"Listen to me very carefully, Lily Mercer," Mark said, his voice ringing with pure, unwavering conviction. "You did nothing wrong. That dress is beautiful, and your mother would be so proud to see you wearing it. Victoria was a sick, greedy person who had badness inside her heart. It had nothing to do with you. You are the best thing that ever happened to me, and you are the most important person in this entire world."
Lily wiped her eyes with the back of her small hand. "More important than the house?"
"More important than every house in the world," Mark said softly. "If I had to burn this whole mansion to the ground to keep you safe, I would do it in a second."
Lily let out a small, trembling sigh, leaning her head back against his shoulder. "Can I sleep in your room tonight?"
May you like
"You can sleep in my room for as long as you want," Mark whispered, standing up with her in his arms and carrying her toward the door.
As he walked down the dimly lit hallway, Mark knew that winning the legal battle against Victoria was only half the war. The real battle was repairing the sense of safety that had been shattered inside his daughter's heart—and he would fight that battle every single day for the rest of his life.
