Chapter 13 - The Auditing of ShadowsBy early 2028, my firm had grown from a solo practice into a team of five senior forensic accountants and two legal researchers.

On a bright Tuesday morning, Special Agent Marcus Vance visited my Montrose office, carrying a sealed box of financial records from a high-profile municipal corruption case in San Antonio.

He set the box on my conference table with a heavy thud.

"The U.S. Attorney’s office wants you as the primary expert witness for the prosecution, Dr. Vance," Agent Vance said, leaning against the table with a respectful smile. "The defense hired three corporate accounting firms to hide an eight-million-dollar land procurement scam, and none of our analysts can crack their secondary encryption algorithms."

I pulled up a chair, opened the top binder, and scanned the routing codes.

Within two minutes, my eyes caught the familiar, sloppy pattern: a double-entry clearing house mechanism designed to route payments through offshore shell accounts in the Bahamas.

"They're using the same double-ledger structure Arthur used in 2022," I smiled, pulling out a yellow highlighter. "It takes twenty minutes to map if you know where the ghost accounts are hidden."

Agent Vance shook his head in quiet awe. "You really are the best in the state, Tessa."

"I had very thorough teachers," I replied smoothly, highlighting the first illegal wire transfer in bright yellow ink. "They just didn't realize I was taking notes."

Later that evening, after the office had cleared out, I sat by the window holding a warm mug of coffee.

I pulled out my journal—a simple leather-bound book where I recorded my thoughts. On the first page was a copy of the CT scan taken at Hermann Memorial two years ago, showing the cracked bone of my cheekbone.

The cold made me freeze, but the truth made me unbreakable.
