Chapter 4 - The Country ClubThe grand ballroom of the River Oaks Country Club was draped in white silk, crystal chandeliers, and elaborate arrangements of white orchids.

Over two hundred of Houston’s wealthiest elite—bankers, politicians, board members, and socialites—sat at round tables sipping champagne while local news cameras lined the back of the room.

On the raised wooden stage stood Arthur Vance, looking immaculate in a tailored dark blue suit, his silver hair perfectly styled. Beside him stood my mother, Vivian, wearing a high-necked cream silk dress designed specifically to cover any residual scratches or marks from her assault on me. She wore three-carat diamond earrings and a sad, practiced expression of maternal grief.

Beside her sat Emma, dressed in a designer black velvet cocktail dress, holding an iPad and dabbing occasionally at her eyes with a lace handkerchief for the cameras.

Arthur stepped up to the podium, adjusting his brass microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and friends," Arthur began, his voice deep, rich, and vibrating with practiced tragedy. "Thank you for joining us today on this difficult afternoon."

The room fell into a quiet, sympathetic hush.

"As many of you know," Arthur continued, lowering his eyes appropriately, "our family has recently suffered a devastating personal tragedy. My eldest daughter, Tessa, whom we love dearly, has suffered a severe, tragic mental health crisis that resulted in a violent episode at our home earlier this week."

Vivian let out a soft, theatrical sob into her handkerchief. Emma patted her mother's back comfortingly, making sure the camera crew from Channel 13 caught the moment.

"While Tessa is currently receiving specialized psychiatric care," Arthur lied smoothly, "my wife, Vivian, and I have decided to channel our family’s private pain into public good. Today, we are proud to announce the creation of the Vivian Vance Foundation for Youth Mental Health, backed by an initial personal gift of ten million dollars—"

The heavy double oak doors at the back of the grand ballroom suddenly flew open.

BANG!

The loud crash echoed off the vaulted ceilings, cutting Arthur off mid-sentence.

Two dozen uniformed Houston police officers and armed federal agents from the FBI stepped into the ballroom, flanked by Detective Cole Voss and Special Agent Marcus Vance.

Behind them, pushing her own wheelchair with quiet, unyielding grace, walked a woman in a simple charcoal gray hospital suit, her head bandaged, her left eye bruised purple, her jaw set like chipped granite.

It was me.

The entire ballroom erupted into an immediate, shock-filled gasp. Guests stood up from their tables, chairs scraping loudly against the parquet floor, as news cameras instantly pivoted away from the stage to focus their lenses on my face.

Arthur’s mouth fell open. His face turned a splotchy, dark red as he gripped the edges of the podium so hard his knuckles turned white.

"Tessa...?" Vivian gasped, staggering back an inch, her hand flying to her throat.

May you like

I locked my eyes onto my mother’s pale, terrified face.

"Good morning, Mom," I said into the silent room, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet ballroom. "I brought some friends to see your new foundation."
