Chapter 2 - The Paper FortressThe investigation didn't start with a flashy police raid or sirens blazing down River Oaks Boulevard. It started in a windowless briefing room on the eighth floor of the FBI’s Houston Field Office on Federal Road.

By 8:00 a.m. the following morning, Detective Cole Voss and Bridget Colton stood before a panel of six federal investigators, including Senior Special Agent Marcus Vance—no relation to my family, though the irony was not lost on anyone in the room.

Agent Vance was a veteran forensic accountant with thirty years of service under his belt. He sat at the head of a long oak table, surrounded by paper printouts of the decrypted files Bridget had delivered.

"Let me understand this clearly," Agent Vance said, running a hand over his tired face as he stared at a wire-transfer diagram linking Vance Financial Holdings to four shell entities in Grand Cayman. "Tessa Vance was employed as the lead internal auditor for her father’s firm for three years?"

"Four years," Bridget corrected, standing at the edge of the room with her arms crossed over her tailored suit jacket. "Tessa holds a master’s degree in forensic accounting from UT Austin. Her father, Arthur, hired her specifically because he believed family loyalty would keep her quiet, or at least blind to the internal routing codes."

"And instead," Voss added, sliding a medical report across the table, "she systematically cross-referenced every illicit transaction, backed it up on encrypted cloud servers and physical drives, and hid them off-site before her family realized she was building a federal RICO case."

Agent Vance picked up the trauma report from Hermann Memorial. His eyes lingered on the high-resolution CT scans showing my fractured orbital socket, three cracked ribs, and severe soft-tissue contusions.

"They beat her nearly to death," Agent Vance murmured, his tone dropping an octave into dangerous territory, "and dumped her behind a dumpster to cover up a multi-million-dollar banking fraud."

"They didn't just beat her to cover it up," Bridget said coldly. "They tried to pre-emptively ruin her credibility by filing a false police report and petitioning for an involuntary psychiatric hold. If Tessa hadn't survived that night, or if she had woken up in a state mental facility, Arthur Vance would have wiped those drives and walked away clean."

Agent Vance closed the trauma file with a heavy, quiet thud. He looked up at the five federal agents seated around the table.

"Issue federal subpoenas for every server, hard drive, and financial record at Vance Financial Holdings," Agent Vance ordered flatly. "Contact the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of Texas. I want emergency freezing orders placed on all domestic and international accounts associated with Arthur Vance, Vivian Vance, and Vance Holdings by noon."

"What about the domestic assault charges?" Detective Voss asked.

Agent Vance looked at Voss with a dark, satisfied expression.

"Let the state charges ride right alongside our federal indictment," Vance said. "We aren't just going to arrest them, Detective. We're going to dismantle their entire world."
