Chapter 13 - The Mother's ReckoningWith Evelyn Vance in federal custody and Diego facing decades behind bars, only one pillar of the conspiracy remained standing: Brenna Vance-Castillo.

At 2:00 PM, my father and I arranged a private face-to-face visitation at the Denver Women's Correctional Facility.

When the heavy steel door opened, Brenna walked in, guarded by two officers. Despite wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, she kept her back straight and her head held high, her eyes flashing with forty years of buried hatred as she took her seat behind the thick bulletproof glass.

My father sat on the left; I sat on the right, resting a hand gently on my stomach.

Brenna picked up the black phone receiver on her side of the glass. I lifted mine.

"You look remarkably well for someone who was shivering like a dying dog on a stone patio forty-eight hours ago," Brenna sneered, her voice dripping with venom through the speaker.

"And you look exactly where you belong, Brenna," I replied smoothly. "In a cage."

Brenna let out a cold, sharp laugh, turning her eyes to my father. "Do you think this scares me, Alvin? Do you think a few months in a cell erases what you did to me thirty years ago in Zurich? You stole my youth! You discarded me like trash when you met Clara’s mother!"

My father picked up his phone receiver, his voice calm, deep, and devoid of any emotion.

"I gave you twenty million dollars thirty years ago, Brenna," Dad said. "You chose to waste it on failed investments and bitter revenge. You raised your son to be a parasite, and now both of you will spend the rest of your lives paying for that mistake."

"You haven't won!" Brenna shouted, pressing her hand against the glass. "The Helios Trust charter is still locked in Zurich! My sister Evelyn holds the decryption keys! You can't touch the hundred million dollars without my authorization!"

I leaned forward, pressing my face close to the glass, a slow, radiant smile touching my lips.

"Evelyn gave us the decryption keys twenty minutes ago, Brenna," I whispered into the phone. "She signed a full cooperation agreement with the Department of Justice in Miami in exchange for a reduced sentence."

Brenna froze. Her breathing became shallow and ragged. "What... what did you say?"

"Every asset tied to Vesper Limited has been frozen," I continued. "And the Zurich foundation board voted an hour ago to dissolve the original charter. The entire hundred million dollars has been formally transferred into a single, untouchable trust fund."

I took a deep, clean breath, looking her straight in her bloodshot eyes.

"In my daughter's name."
