Chapter 5 - Ashes and the Secret TrustSeven minutes later, red and blue emergency lights flashed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the living room, painting the timber walls in violent crimson.

The front door was breached with a heavy hydraulic thud.

Four paramedics rushed into the living room carrying thermal blankets and trauma kits, followed immediately by County Sheriff Thomas Nolan and two armed deputies.

"Hypothermia! Get the heated blankets on her now!" the lead paramedic barked, kneeling beside me.

They stripped away my wet clothes, wrapping me in thermal insulation. A nurse pressed a portable Doppler ultrasound wand against my exposed stomach.

The living room was silent except for the sound of my ragged breathing.

Then, a fast, rhythmic thump-thump-thump-thump echoed from the machine's speaker.

The baby’s heartbeat. Strong. Fast. Alive.

A harsh sob escaped my throat, and tears finally poured down my cold face as I clutched the paramedic’s sleeve. "She's... she's okay?"

"She's fighting, ma'am," the paramedic said gently. "We're taking you to Saint Jude's Trauma Center right now."

Sheriff Nolan looked around the empty living room, his hand resting on his sidearm. "Where is Mr. Castillo?"

Nobody in the room answered.

Then, my phone—which a paramedic had retrieved from my wet bag and set on the coffee table—lit up on speakerphone. My father’s voice filled the room.

"Check the second-floor study, Sheriff," Alvin Sterling commanded.

Sheriff Nolan frowned at the phone. "Mr. Sterling? How do you know where he is?"

"Because I am watching him on Camera 4," my father replied coldly. "He and his mother are attempting to destroy evidence."

Upstairs in the study, Diego and Brenna stood before the stone fireplace, frantically throwing pages of the altered contracts into the dancing flames. Smoke filled the room as the paper curled into black ash.

They thought they were destroying the evidence of their betrayal.

What Diego didn't know was that the originals had already been captured, scanned, and uploaded to my father’s secure cloud server the moment I put them in my bag.

Nor did he know that the fraudulent property transfer to Vesper Limited had triggered an automatic corporate fraud alert in my father’s legal department four days ago. My father hadn't just watched tonight's attack—he had been building a ironclad federal case against Diego and Evelyn Vance for weeks.

Footsteps thundered up the stairs. Sheriff Nolan and his deputies kicked open the study door.

"Hands where I can see them! Step away from the hearth!" Nolan roared, drawing his Taser.

Diego froze, his hands covered in black soot, a half-burned contract page still in his fingers. "Sheriff, wait! This is a domestic misunderstanding! My wife was confused—"

"Save it for the magistrate, Castillo," Nolan snapped. "Cuff him."

The deputies yanked Diego's arms behind his back, the steel handcuffs clicking tightly around his wrists.

Brenna stood beside the desk, watching her son get restrained. But instead of crying or pleading, a bitter, vicious smile spread across her face.

She turned toward the corner security camera—looking straight at my father through the lens—and began to laugh. A sharp, mocking sound that chilled the air in the room.

"You think you’re so brilliant, don't you, Alvin?" Brenna called out to the camera, her voice dripping with venom. "You think this is about a few shares of Sterling Maritime? You think you've won?"

The deputies paused, looking at her in confusion.

Brenna took a step toward the camera, her eyes wide and wild.

"Ask him, Clara!" Brenna shouted down toward the hallway, knowing her voice would carry. "Ask your precious father who really owns your baby's trust! Ask him what he did thirty years ago in Zurich!"
