Chapter 7 - The Paper TrailMy father did not answer immediately. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a encrypted satellite phone, and handed it to Arthur Vance—his chief legal counsel, who had just stepped into the room carrying a leather briefcase.

"Arthur will handle the legal filings for the divorce and the restraining order tonight," my father said, smoothly redirecting the conversation. "You need to rest."
"Dad," I demanded, pulling my hand back slightly. "Don't deflect. Brenna wasn't lying. She knew something. What was she talking about?"
Arthur Vance glanced at my father, exchanging a silent, loaded look before turning to me.
"Clara," Arthur said softly, setting his briefcase on the bedside table. "What Brenna Castillo was referring to is a complex asset structure created before you were born. When your father expanded Sterling Maritime into European waters thirty years ago, he established a foundation in Zurich—the Helios Trust."
"I know about Helios," I said, frowning. "That’s the educational trust set up for my child’s future."
"It was meant to be," Arthur explained, opening a file folder containing dark, vintage bank ledgers stamped in red Swiss ink. "However, six months ago, Diego discovered an old loophole in the original foundation charter. Because your late mother’s family originally provided part of the offshore capital for Helios, the trust contained a contingency clause: if the primary beneficiary—you—were deemed mentally or physically incapacitated, control of the entire hundred-million-dollar fund would automatically revert to your spouse."
The room went completely still. The rhythmic beep-beep-beep of my heart monitor seemed to grow louder.
I looked at my father. "That's why he wanted me out in the cold. He wasn't just trying to scare me into signing the property transfer."

"He was trying to trigger a medical emergency," my father said, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "If you had slipped into a coma from severe hypothermia tonight, Diego would have used his power of attorney to declare you incapacitated. By morning, he would have assumed full control of the Helios Trust—and transferred every dollar to Vesper Limited."
"And Evelyn Vance," I whispered, the final piece of the terrifying puzzle locking into place. "She wasn't just his mistress. She was the financial broker who helped him find the loophole."
