Chapter 9 - The Golden CageThe revelation hit me like a second wave of freezing water.

My entire marriage—the romantic chance meeting at an art gallery five years ago, Diego’s relentless courting, his sweet promises, our grand wedding—had all been a carefully orchestrated, cold-blooded setup designed by a bitter woman seeking revenge against my father.
Diego had never loved me. I was simply the instrument of his mother's vengeance.
"They used me," I whispered, tears burning behind my eyelids, though I refused to let them fall. "Every smile, every gift, every moment... it was all fake."
"They underestimated you, Clara," my father said, reaching out to grasp my knee firmly. "And they severely underestimated me. Brenna thought she could play the long game. But tonight, she overplayed her hand."
At 6:00 AM, we arrived at the Sterling Estate in Denver.
The tall iron gates opened automatically, closing behind us with a heavy, reassuring thud. The compound was surrounded by ten-foot stone walls, infrared perimeter sensors, and six private security guards patrolling the grounds. For the first time in months, I felt safe enough to breathe.
My father’s staff had prepared the master guest suite for me, filling it with soft lighting, warm blankets, and fresh flowers.
As I lay in the oversized bed, staring up at the carved wooden ceiling, Arthur Vance stepped into the doorway, holding a secure satellite phone.
"Mr. Sterling," Arthur said, his expression grim. "We have a situation at the county jail."

My father stood up instantly. "Did the judge grant bail?"
"No," Arthur replied. "It’s worse. Diego’s attorney just filed an emergency motion with the State District Court. They aren't trying to post bail. They are filing for immediate emergency custody of your unborn child."
