Chapter 6 - The Unexpected InvitationThe annual maritime infrastructure summit was held at the Grand Regency Hotel in Stamford, a gathering where Connecticut’s elite business magnates carved up shipping routes and trade concessions over single-malt scotch.

Raymond Whitmore arrived wearing a tailored charcoal suit, his arm linked firmly with Julianna’s. Margaret walked alongside them, her head held high, beaming at every photographer who flashed a camera.
For the Whitmores, the night was a victory lap. Raymond’s logistics empire was preparing to expand into European trade lanes, a multi-million-dollar deal that hinged entirely on renewing their port lease with Ellison-Bell Shipping.
"Don't worry, darling," Raymond whispered to Julianna as they took their seats near the front stage. "The board of Ellison-Bell is a group of old men. I’ve met with their proxies—the contract renewal will be signed before dessert."
"And Clara?" Julianna asked softly, adjusting her diamond necklace. "Has she signed the annulment papers yet?"
Margaret snorted softly behind them. "Clara is probably sitting in some rundown apartment in New York living on her meager allowance. She has no money, no family, and no leverage. She won't dare fight us in court."
On stage, the outgoing interim chairman of Ellison-Bell stepped up to the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome," the old man announced, his voice echoing through the grand hall. "Before we review the commercial port leases for the upcoming decade, I have the distinct privilege of introducing the newly confirmed Chairperson of Ellison-Bell Shipping. She holds forty-five percent of our voting shares under the late Julian Ellison’s master trust."

Raymond froze, his glass of wine stopping halfway to his lips. "Julian Ellison? But he died years ago..."
The heavy double doors at the side of the auditorium opened.
