Chapter 10 - The Sovereign GuardSix Months Later

The spring sun over North Carolina was warm and bright, turning the lawn a deep, vibrant green.

I stood in the backyard wearing a plain t-shirt and jeans, fire sparking from the charcoal grill as I prepped steaks for dinner. The smell of barbecue smoke drifted through the air.

In the yard, Evan was kicking a soccer ball against the wooden fence, his laughter ringing out as Marcus tried—and failed—to block his shot.

"Hey! That was a hand ball, Ref!" Marcus yelled playfully, chasing Evan across the grass.

Emily sat at the patio table under the umbrella, sipping iced tea and reading a novel, looking completely at ease. The anxiety that had shadowed her face for months was completely gone, replaced by the relaxed demeanor of a normal teenager.

I stepped over to the table and set down a plate of grilled corn. "How's the book, Em?"

"It's good, Dad," she smiled, looking up at me with bright, clear eyes. "Are we still going camping this weekend?"

"Packed and ready," I said, leaning down to ruffle her hair. "Just waiting on your brother to finish his soccer practice."

My military career had shifted to a local instructor role at the regional training center—no more overseas deployments, no more long months away from home. My focus was entirely where it belonged: on my children and the secure life we had built from the ashes of betrayal.

I leaned against the patio railing, holding a cold drink, looking out over my home, my kids, and my best friend.

The messages in the dust, the forged deeds, and the lies were behind us. The fortress had been tested, defended, and rebuilt—stronger, safer, and completely secure.

I took a deep breath of the fresh spring air and smiled. We were finally home.
