Chapter 20 - The Guard RemainsAutumn 2028

The cool autumn air rustled through the oak trees lining our cul-de-sac, dropping golden leaves across the green lawn.
It was a quiet Sunday evening. Inside the house, the warm glow of the living room lamps cast a soft light onto the front porch. Evan was in his room finishing his middle-school social studies project, while Emily was at the kitchen table studying for her driver's license exam.
I walked out onto the front porch, wearing a comfortable fleece jacket, holding a mug of steaming tea.

I locked the phone and slid it back into my pocket, listening to the gentle creak of the porch swing against the ceiling hooks.

Standing up to the storm hadn't been fast, and it hadn't been easy. But by keeping my head clear, acting with absolute discipline, and putting my children above all else, the storm had passed.
The lies were gone. The forged deeds were dust. The bad actors were locked away behind bars.
And here, on this quiet porch, under the evening stars, my home stood strong, warm, and forever safe.

The perimeter was clear. My family was safe. And I was home.
