Chapter 9 - The RebuildingTwo weeks later, the house felt entirely different.

The furniture in the master bedroom had been replaced. The silk robes, the unfamiliar colognes, and the lingering traces of Natalie’s betrayal were stripped away, replaced by the simple, clean atmosphere of a home undergoing restoration.

I had been granted extended domestic emergency leave by my battalion commander, allowing me to stay stationed at the local reserve center for the next six months to stabilize my household before making a decision on my military future.

On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, I sat in the living room watching Evan build an intricate Lego castle on the rug, while Emily sat on the sofa working on her homework.

My phone rang. The caller ID showed Sarah Lin's office.

"David," Sarah said when I answered. "I just got off the phone with the District Attorney. Westbrook entered a guilty plea to felony wire fraud and conspiracy. He received six years in state prison and was ordered to pay full restitution for the $63,000."

"And Vance?"

"His military court-martial concluded this morning," Sarah added. "Dismissal from the service, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and five years confinement at Leavenworth."

I let out a long breath, watching the afternoon sunlight filter through the clean living room windows. "Thank you, Sarah. For everything."

"You did the hard part, David," she said warmly. "Take care of those kids."

I hung up the phone and set it on the coffee table.

Emily looked up from her textbook, having overheard part of the conversation. "Was that about Mom?"

"It was about Westbrook and Vance," I told her gently. "It's completely over now, Em. They're going to prison."

Emily dropped her pen and rested her chin on her hands, staring out the window for a moment. "What happens to Mom now?"

"She's living with your grandmother in Charlotte," I said. "Her lawyers are setting up a supervised visitation schedule. You and Evan can see her whenever you feel ready, but no one is going to force you."

May you like

Emily nodded slowly, a subtle weight seeming to lift from her shoulders. "I just want things to be normal again, Dad."

"They will be," I promised her. "Starting right now."
