Chapter 13 - The New UniformBy the time summer arrived, my military status had transitioned permanently.

After ten years of active duty and three combat deployments, I officially signed my transfer paperwork into the Army Reserve, stepping into a full-time civilian role as a logistics coordinator for a regional defense contractor twenty minutes from our house.

No more overseas rotations. No more deployment orders. My duty station was now my home town.

On a bright June morning, I stood in the master bedroom, buttoning up a crisp blue dress shirt instead of my operational camouflage uniform.

A soft knock sounded on the open door frame. Emily stood there holding two coffee mugs, wearing a bright yellow summer dress.

"First day at the new corporate office, Staff Sergeant," she teased gently, handing me one of the mugs. "How are the nerves?"

"Different kind of tactical environment," I chuckled, taking a sip of the hot coffee. "Fewer sandstorms, more middle management meetings."

"You'll do fine, Dad," Emily said, her smile warm and genuine. "You're the boss of everything anyway."

Downstairs, Evan was sitting at the kitchen table eating a bowl of cereal, his soccer gear packed in a bag by the front door.

I grabbed my briefcase, checked my reflection in the hallway mirror, and walked out to the kitchen. The house smelled of toasted bread, fresh coffee, and the quiet, steady rhythm of an ordinary Tuesday morning.

As I picked up my car keys, I looked at my kids. They were healthy, secure, and grounded in a house that belonged entirely to them.

"Evan, I'm picking you up from soccer practice at five," I said. "Emily, Marcus is taking you to your driving lesson at four."

"Got it, Dad," Evan called out around a mouthful of cereal.

I opened the front door, stepping out into the warm, sunlit morning air. For years, I had defined myself by the uniform I wore and the unit I led. Standing on my porch today, I realized the most important command I would ever hold was right here under this roof.
