Chapter 6 - The Morning After

By 6:00 AM, the cold autumn sun rose over the neighborhood, casting a pale gray light through the living room blinds.

The local police had taken Daniel Westbrook into custody for questioning regarding the fraudulent land transfer filings, while Army CID retained Captain Vance under military jurisdiction. Natalie had spent the night in the master bedroom with the door locked, sobbing intermittently before settling into a heavy, silent dread.

I sat at the kitchen island with a mug of black coffee, watching the rain trickle down the glass patio door. The broken wine glass and spilled Cabernet had been cleaned up, the floor scrubbed spotless.

The front door opened quietly, and Marcus walked in, followed by Emily and Evan.

Evan, holding a stuffed backpack, looked tired and confused. But the moment his eyes landed on me sitting in my uniform, his face lit up.

"Dad!" he yelled, dropping his bag and sprinting across the hardwood floor.

I caught him in my arms, pulling him into a tight embrace, feeling his small hands grip the back of my uniform shirt. "Hey, buddy," I whispered, holding his head against my shoulder. "I missed you."

Emily stood near the entryway, her hands tucked into her hoodie pockets, watching us with cautious, uncertain eyes. She looked older than fifteen— exhaustion had drawn dark circles under her eyes.

I gently loosened my grip on Evan and looked up at her. "Come here, Em."

She took two slow steps, then broke into a run, throwing her arms around my neck. I stood up, wrapping both arms around my daughter, holding her close as she buried her face in my shoulder and began to cry quietly.

"I'm sorry, Dad," she sobbed softly into my collar. "I'm so sorry."

"You have nothing to apologize for, sweetheart," I said firmly, rubbing her back. "You saved this family. You did everything right."

From the top of the stairs, the sound of a door unlatching echoed through the house.

Natalie stepped out onto the landing, wearing jeans and an oversized sweater. Her eyes were red and swollen, her hair pulled back into a messy knot. She looked down at the four of us standing in the foyer.

Evan looked up, his brows furrowing. "Mom? Why are you awake so early? Where's Mr. Westbrook?"

The silence that followed was suffocating. Natalie opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. She looked at me, her eyes pleading for help, terrified of what I would tell our son.

I looked up at her, keeping my voice calm for Evan’s sake. "Evan, why don't you go upstairs and put your things in your room? Your sister and I need to talk with Mom for a few minutes."

Evan looked between us, sensing the tension, but nodded slowly. "Okay, Dad."

As Evan headed up the stairs, passing his mother without a word, I turned to Marcus.

"Take Emily to the kitchen to get some breakfast," I said quietly.

Then I pointed toward the home office near the front door. "Natalie. Office. Now."
