Chapter 14 - The Unbroken CircleBy the middle of July, the court-ordered supervised visits between Natalie and the children had settled into a predictable, subdued routine.

Once a month, Natalie was permitted a three-hour supervised dinner at a local family restaurant in Raleigh. She had secured a small apartment in Charlotte, worked as a receptionist at a dental clinic, and was making steady progress through her court-mandated therapy programs.
On a warm Friday evening, I sat in my truck in the restaurant parking lot, waiting for the three-hour window to close.
At 7:00 PM, the restaurant doors opened.
Natalie walked out with Evan and Emily. Evan was holding a small box of leftover pizza, chatting happily with his mother, while Emily walked beside them, comfortable and calm.
When they reached my truck, Natalie stopped at the driver's side window. She looked healthier than she had six months ago—sober, quiet, and realistic about her boundaries.
"Thank you for driving them up, David," Natalie said softly, keeping her hands tucked into her sweater pockets.
"They had a good time?" I asked, looking at Evan in the rearview mirror as he climbed into the back seat.
"Yeah! Mom bought me a extra-large pepperoni pizza," Evan shouted happily, buckling his seatbelt.
Emily climbed into the passenger seat, setting her purse on her lap. "It was nice, Dad. We talked about school."
Natalie looked at me through the open window. There was no anger left between us, no bitter accusations, and no lingering drama. The court orders were clear, the divorce was finalized, and the reality of her choices had settled into an unalterable history.
"I'm sticking to the therapy schedule, David," Natalie said quietly. "My attorney is going to request unmonitored day visits for the fall."
I looked at her steadily. "If the court evaluator approves it and the kids are comfortable with it, I won't oppose it, Natalie. All I care about is that they are safe and happy."

Natalie bit her lip, nodding slowly. "I know. Thank you."
She waved to the kids, stepped back toward her own car, and drove away into the evening traffic.
