Chapter 1 - The Alley in the RainThe autumn air in downtown Seattle was sharp and smelled of wet asphalt and diesel fumes. Rain dripped steadily from the rusted fire escapes of the alley behind 4th Avenue, pooling in murky puddles along the cracked concrete.

Seven-year-old Chloe stood near the edge of the alley, her bright white wool coat pristine against the grime of the surrounding brick walls. Her small yellow boots stepped carefully around grease stains. In her gloved hands, she held a wax-paper wrapper containing half of a turkey and cranberry sandwich—her untouched lunch from the high-end bakery around the corner.
Sitting against a damp, graffiti-covered wall was a boy. He looked no older than nine, wrapped in oversized, frayed gray rags that served as a makeshift coat. His face and hands were streaked with soot and dirt, his dark blonde hair matted from days on the street.
He didn't beg. He simply sat motionless, his chest rising and falling in shallow breaths as he watched the clean, bright world pass by the mouth of the alley.
Chloe took three quiet steps forward.
“Here, take it,” she said softly.
The little girl in the white coat held out her sandwich with both gloved hands.
The boy stared at the food like he didn’t trust it could be real. He looked up at her face, then down at the sandwich, his eyes wide and hollow with starvation. Slowly, his dirt-stained fingers reached out, his hands trembling as he took the wrapped bread carefully, as if it might vanish if he held it too tightly.
“Thank you,” he whispered, his raspy voice barely audible over the hum of city traffic.
Before he could pull back into his corner, Chloe leaned down and wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, hugging him tightly.

For one small second, the boy closed his eyes, leaning his head gently against the warmth of her shoulder—a touch of genuine human kindness he hadn't felt in four long years.
Then, sharp heels struck the pavement behind them.
