Chapter 11 - The Whispers in the NurseryThe morning light broke over Mercer Island in a blanket of heavy gray fog.

Inside the master suite, Eleanor was dressing for a meeting with the family’s estate attorneys when the door opened softly. Eight-year-old Chloe stepped into the room, holding Leo tightly by the hand. Both children looked pale, their small faces shadowed by a sleepless night.
"Chloe, sweetheart, what's wrong?" Eleanor asked, kneeling in her silk robe to meet their gaze. "Is Leo feeling sick?"
"Mommy," Chloe said, her voice dropping into a shaky, terrified whisper. "Dad lied to you."
Eleanor froze, looking between her daughter's dead-serious eyes and Leo, who was staring at the floor, clutching his sister's sleeve. "What are you talking about, Chloe?"
"Last night, I went to get water for Leo," Chloe explained, her chin trembling. "I saw Dad go into his secret room downstairs. He was talking on a phone to a bad man named Gideon. He said... he said Leo was remembering his voice, and that he was going to meet the bad man at Pier 8 tonight with a lot of money."
The room seemed to lose all air. Eleanor felt a cold shock travel down her spine.
"Chloe, are you sure?" Eleanor whispered, her heart pounding violently against her ribs. "Did you hear the name Gideon?"
Leo slowly lifted his head. His small voice was clear and terrified. "Gideon... the man in the dark room. He told me my daddy didn't want me anymore."

Eleanor covered her mouth as tears spilled over her cheeks. A terrifying wave of realization washed over her. The financial discrepancies she had questioned four years ago, Julian’s insistence on abandoning the search for Leo, his cold reaction when she brought him home—the pieces aligned into a horrific picture.
Her husband hadn't just lost their son. He had sold him.
