Chapter 14 - The Trapped RatsPanic exploded across Pier 8.
"You setup!" Gideon roared, pulling a firearm from his coat and firing wildly toward the police barricade.
"No! I didn't call them!" Julian screamed, dropping to his knees on the wet wood, covering his head as gunfire echoed off the metal containers.
Tactical officers advanced under the cover of armored shields. Within seconds, a sniper round struck Gideon’s shoulder, dropping him to the wet planks. Officers swarmed him, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Julian tried to crawl toward his Maybach, his expensive suit soaked in filthy rainwater, but Detective Lin stepped directly into his path, her service weapon pointed at his chest.
"Julian Vance," Detective Lin said, her voice cold and unyielding above the rain. "You are under arrest for federal conspiracy, kidnapping, child endangerment, and wire fraud."
Julian looked up into the glaring headlights, his face pale with horror. "You don't understand! My wife... she made a mistake! I was paying a ransom!"

"Save it for the judge, Vance," Detective Lin spat, kicking the briefcase away from him as two officers pulled Julian to his feet, forcing his hands behind his back. "Your wife was the one who gave us your meeting coordinates."
Julian’s eyes widened in total shock as the cold metal of the handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
