Chapter 13 - The Father's LegacyWhile the legal trap tightened around my mother, Julian Ross uncovered another critical piece of the puzzle—one that reshaped everything I thought I knew about Savannah's past.

Late one evening, Julian visited our apartment carrying a sealed yellow legal envelope.
"When Savannah's father, Marcus Vance, passed away five years ago, he left her a $5.3 million trust," Julian explained, spreading documents across our dining table. "At the time, everyone believed he made his fortune entirely through his commercial shipping firm."
"He did," Savannah said, setting down two cups of herbal tea. "My father worked eighteen hours a day to build that firm."
"Yes, but there was a hidden clause in his estate structure," Julian revealed, pointing to a notarized document from 2020. "Six months before he died, Marcus realized your mother, Bernice, was attempting to nose around his financial filings during a family visit."
I looked at Julian in surprise. "My dad was still alive then. My mother knew Savannah's father?"
"She didn't just know him, Christopher," Julian said quietly. "Bernice approached Marcus four years ago, trying to pressure him into investing his company’s capital into her fake Nevada shell company. Marcus saw right through her. He threatened to report her for fraud."
Savannah gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.
"That's why she hated me," Savannah murmured, the realization dawning on her face. "It wasn't just jealousy... she was terrified my father had told me about her fraud scheme before he died!"
"Exactly," Julian confirmed. "Marcus knew what kind of woman Bernice was. That’s why he created a protective spendthrift trust for Savannah. He specifically designed the trust so that no member of the Sterling family—other than you, Christopher—could ever touch a single cent of her inheritance."
Julian slid a sealed letter across the table to Savannah.
"Your father left this in his attorney's vault, with instructions to deliver it to you only if Bernice ever tried to contest your assets."
Savannah’s fingers trembled as she broke the wax seal. She read her father's handwriting silently, tears welling in her eyes.

"My dearest Savannah," the letter read. "If you are reading this, it means Bernice has revealed her true nature. Never let her convince you that you are weak. You carry the blood of a builder, not a predator. Hold your ground, protect your family, and let the truth be your shield."
Savannah held the letter against her chest, crying quietly—not out of sorrow, but out of profound relief. Her father had been protecting her all along.
