Chapter 20 - The View from the CoastIt was a warm Saturday evening in late summer.

The sun was setting low over the Pacific Ocean, painting the San Diego sky in vivid shades of gold, violet, and deep crimson.

Savannah and I stood on the balcony of our home, watching the waves crash gently against the shore below. Maya was fast asleep inside her room, wrapped safely in the soft pink blanket I had bought for her on that fateful Wednesday three years ago.

My phone chimed softly on the patio table.

It was a brief automated notification from the state correction system’s registry, updating the status of inmate Bernice Sterling: Parole Request Denied. Serving remaining sentence.

I looked at the screen for a brief second, then closed the notification without feeling a single ripple of anger or bitterness. The past had lost all power over us.

Savannah stepped up beside me, leaning her head comfortably against my shoulder. I wrapped my arm tightly around her waist, pulling her close into the warm ocean breeze.

"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly, looking out at the glittering horizon.

"I’m thinking about how far we’ve come," I answered, turning my head to kiss the top of her hair. "And how bright the future looks."

Savannah smiled, resting her hand over mine.

"We made it, Christopher," she whispered with deep, absolute peace. "We're finally free."

The sun sank beneath the edge of the ocean, leaving behind a night sky bright with countless stars—a quiet, beautiful world where love had prevailed, truth had conquered, and peace belonged to us forever.
