Chapter 16 - The Iron GatesThe Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla stood as a bleak concrete fortress against the flat, dusty landscape of the Central Valley.

Six months after Maya’s birth, I made a single, private trip to the facility. I didn't go out of anger, nor did I seek an apology or reconciliation. I went because my mother’s legal counsel had filed a motion requesting a modification of her sentence, citing her age and failing health. As the primary victim's husband and a key witness, I was invited to submit a final written statement or deliver it in person during her administrative review.

I sat behind the thick glass partition in the visitor's room.

When the heavy steel door opened, two guards escorted Bernice inside.

The woman who had once spent thousands of dollars on designer clothing, gold jewelry, and salon treatments was entirely gone. She wore a faded blue prison uniform. Her hair was short, untrimmed, and completely silver. Her posture was stooped, and her hands trembled slightly as she pulled herself into the chair across from me.

She lifted the plastic receiver with shaking fingers.

"Christopher..." her voice rasped through the speaker, thin and dry. "You came... Oh, thank God, son. You came to help me."

I held my receiver to my ear, looking at her through the scratched glass with cool, measured detachment.

"I didn't come to help you, Bernice," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "I came to deliver my response to your sentence reduction request."

Tears welling in her tired eyes, she pressed her hand against the glass. "Christopher, please... it's horrible here. They treat me like a common criminal! I'm sixty-four years old! I won't survive eight years in this place! Tell them you forgive me! Tell the judge I've suffered enough!"

"You aren't a victim of circumstance, Bernice," I replied softly. "You are a woman paying a debt for three years of calculated violence, extortion, and theft. You beat my wife while she was pregnant with my child. You tried to ruin her life and steal her inheritance."

"I did it because she was stealing you from me!" Bernice wailed, drawing a sharp warning glare from the armed guard in the corner. "I am your mother!"

"A mother protects her child," I said quietly. "You preyed on mine. I have submitted my formal statement to the board today. I requested that you serve every single day of your eight-year sentence without early parole."

Bernice gasped, the blood draining from her weathered face. "You... you monster..."

May you like

"No," I said, setting the receiver back onto its metal hook. "Just a husband who protects his family."

I stood up, turned my back on her weeping frame, and walked out into the warm California sun, leaving her behind the iron gates forever.
