Chapter 9 - The EscalationThe revelation hit me like a physical blow to the chest.

Everything my mother had presented to me for the past eight years—her sacrifice, her poverty, her devotion, her lonely widowhood—was an elaborate, calculated con. She had parasitized my marriage, tortured my wife, and stolen our money, all while framing herself as the self-sacrificing mother.

"She was planning to move out as soon as the condo purchase closed in two months," Savannah realized softly, her eyes wide with shock. "That's why she got so aggressive recently. She was trying to force me to surrender my share of the apartment before she left, so she could claim a legal stake in our home value!"

"Exactly," Julian nodded. "She wanted to lock in her share of your real estate equity before walking away clean."

Before we could discuss our next legal move, my phone buzzed again.

It was an urgent alert from our high-rise apartment building’s smart security system.

ALERT: Unauthorized door access attempt at Unit 14B.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I pulled up the live security camera feed from our front hallway on my phone.

On the screen, standing directly outside our apartment door, was Bernice.

She wasn't alone. Standing beside her was a burly man wearing a locksmith uniform, carrying a heavy tool bag. Bernice was gesturing frantically toward our lock, handing the man a forged set of property papers.

She was trying to break into our apartment while we were away—attempting to access Savannah’s laptop, destroy the digital drive, or alter the crime scene before the formal police forensics team could inspect the hallway.

"Julian! She’s at the apartment with a locksmith!" I yelled, jumping out of my chair.

Julian immediately reached for his desk phone and dialed Detective Miller’s direct line.

"Miller? This is Julian Ross. Bernice Sterling is currently actively violating the emergency restraining order at 1200 Harbour Drive, Unit 14B. She is attempting forced entry with a hired locksmith. Send units immediately."

"We're on our way," Miller’s voice crackled through the speaker.
