Chapter 1 - The Glass Between UsThe rhythmic, mechanical beep of the cardiac monitor echoed through the sterile emergency bay, a relentless reminder that every second was a battle between life and death.

Derrick Sterling stood motionless on the cold tile floor of Metropolitan General Hospital, his palm pressed flat against the reinforced glass window separating the observation corridor from Trauma Bay 4. His dark eyes, shadowed by exhaustion and sharp, unyielding grief, were fixed on the woman lying unconscious on the gurney inside.
Her name was Maya Vance.
Under the harsh fluorescent lights, she looked fragile—a stark contrast to the brilliant, fiercely independent architect Derrick had known for three years. Oxygen misted the clear plastic mask strapped over her nose and mouth. IV lines snaked into her arms, delivering fluids and medication, while a team of three trauma doctors and nurses worked frantically around her. The vital signs display glowed in stark green and white numbers: a racing pulse, blood pressure fluctuating dangerously at 120/80, oxygen saturation hovering at 99%.
Derrick’s fingers twitched against the glass. The intricate black tattoo inked across the back of his hand—a complex geometric pattern that marked his past—pressed cold against the pane. He wore a dark wool overcoat over his black suit, his dark hair freshly shaved along the sides with sharp, clean lines. Outside, Chicago was drowning in a November downpour, but inside this corridor, the air was suffocatingly still.
He remembered the phone call twenty minutes ago.
“Mr. Sterling? This is Metropolitan Emergency. Maya Vance was brought in via ambulance. There was an incident at the Sterling-Vance construction site on 4th Avenue. Structural collapse on the lower concourse.”
The words had turned Derrick’s blood to ice. The 4th Avenue project was supposed to be the crowning achievement of their partnership—and the hidden reason he had finally decided to break away from his brother’s shadowy empire. For months, Derrick had worked in secret to protect Maya from the darkness that followed the Sterling name. He had let her believe he was merely a wealthy venture capitalist with a clean ledger, hiding the brutal truth: his estranged older brother, Julian Sterling, ran the city’s most dangerous covert syndicate, a multi-million-dollar empire built on extortion, high-stakes coercion, and sabotage.
And now, Julian had finally made his move.
Inside the bay, the lead trauma physician gestured sharply to a nurse, adjusting the IV line near Maya’s wrist. Derrick watched her chest rise and fall under the blue hospital blanket. She had no idea that the accident at her building site was no structural failure. It was a message. A brutal warning aimed directly at Derrick.
A quiet step sounded on the slick floor behind him.
Derrick didn't turn around. He recognized the heavy, deliberate footfalls instantly.
"She's delicate, isn't she?" a smooth, cultured voice rasped from the shadows near the corridor doors.
Derrick’s jaw tightened until the muscles in his cheek throbbed. He slowly drew his hand back from the glass, turning his body with lethal grace.
Standing ten feet away, leaning casually against the stainless-steel handrail, was Julian Sterling. Dressed in a bespoke Italian trench coat, holding a leather folder under his arm, Julian looked more like a corporate CEO than the man who commanded half the underworld in the Midwest.
"Get out of here, Julian," Derrick said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register.
"Is that any way to speak to your brother?" Julian asked, offering a faint, mocking smile. "I came as soon as I heard about the unfortunate malfunction at Maya's site. A tragic engineering error. Such a shame about the structural support beams on floor three."
"It wasn't an error," Derrick stepped closer, stopping inches from Julian's chest. The heat of pure rage radiated off him. "You tampered with the load calculations. You bribed her site foreman."
Julian's smile faded, replaced by cold, calculating stone. "I told you six months ago, Derrick. You don't get to walk away from the Sterling Syndicate. You don't get to live a clean, quiet life in the sunshine with a pretty architect while I handle the dirt. If you try to hand over those encrypted financial ledgers to the federal prosecutor, Maya won't just end up in an ER bay."
Julian leaned in closer, whispering so low only Derrick could hear. "Next time, she won't be breathing."
Derrick’s hand struck out like a viper, grabbing Julian by the lapels of his coat and slamming him back against the corridor wall. A nearby security guard started toward them, but Derrick raised his left hand, freezing the guard in his tracks with an authoritative glare.
"If you touch her again, Julian," Derrick breathed, his eyes burning with pure venom, "I won't just hand over the ledgers. I will tear down everything you've ever built, block by block, until there is nothing left of you."
Julian didn't flinch. He merely smoothed his coat lapels as Derrick released him.
"The deadline is Friday, little brother," Julian murmured, adjusting his silk tie. "Give me the flash drive with the syndicate ledgers, or watch Maya’s entire life crumble around her. Starting tonight."
With a soft chuckle, Julian turned and strolled down the hallway, his leather shoes clicking against the linoleum until he vanished through the heavy double doors into the rain.
Derrick stood alone in the hallway. His breathing was heavy, his heart hammering against his ribs. He turned back to the glass window. Inside, Maya’s fingers moved slightly under the blanket. Her eyelids fluttered, struggling against the heavy sedation.

Derrick pressed his tattooed hand back against the glass, making a silent vow.
He wasn't going to run anymore. He wasn't going to hide the truth. To save Maya's life, he would have to re-enter the dark world he had spent five years trying to escape—and destroy his own blood before his blood destroyed her.
