Chapter 19 - Clear SkiesTwo weeks later, the sun broke over Chicago in a brilliant, cloudless canopy of pale blue.

Inside the glass-walled offices of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Special Agent Mercer set a thick, blue-bound folder onto the conference table.

Derrick sat in a leather armchair, wearing a clean charcoal suit, his tattooed hand resting calmly on his knee. Beside him sat Maya, her color fully restored, a small, faint scar near her hairline the only remaining physical mark of the ordeal.

"The federal judge signed the official exoneration order an hour ago, Derrick," Mercer said, sliding a document across the table. "Your cooperation over the last forty-eight hours—combined with the encrypted master ledger from Box 402—has resulted in forty-two federal indictments."

"What about Julian?" Maya asked quietly.

"Julian agreed to a full guilty plea this morning to avoid the death penalty," Mercer revealed. "He's facing life without parole at ADX Florence. Apex Logistics, the shell companies, and every asset tied to the Sterling network have been permanently seized and liquidated by the federal government."

Mercer stood up, extending his hand across the desk to Derrick.

"You spent five years in the dark, Sterling," Mercer said with genuine respect. "You're clean now. Officially."

Derrick shook Mercer's hand firmly. "Thank you, Agent Mercer."

They walked out of the federal building into the bright afternoon sunlight. The crisp autumn air smelled of cold lake water and fresh leaves.

Derrick and Maya walked down the wide granite steps hand in hand, stopping at the bottom to look out over the city.

"How does it feel?" Maya asked softly, turning to look at him.

Derrick took a long, deep breath—the first completely free breath he had taken in five years.

"It feels like the sun is finally up," he said, offering her a soft, genuine smile.
