Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the PastThe rain had turned into a steady, freezing sleet by the time Derrick walked out through the automatic doors of Metropolitan General.

He pulled the collar of his coat up around his neck, walking briskly toward his dark sedan parked in the emergency zone. Inside his breast pocket, his phone vibrated with an encrypted text message.
[UNKNOWN NUMBER]: The file transfer was intercepted at 11:42 PM. Julian knows about the offshore accounts.
Derrick slammed his fist against the steering wheel of his car, lighting a cigarette with trembling fingers. The smoke filled the dark leather interior.
Five years ago, Derrick Sterling was the tactical head of Sterling Enterprises—the legitimate front for Julian’s criminal network. Derrick was the one who managed security, wiped digital footprints, and ensured the syndicate’s operations ran without drawing federal scrutiny. But when a botched extortion job resulted in the death of an innocent whistleblower, Derrick drew the line. He broke ties with Julian, wiped three master servers, and walked away with the syndicate’s master financial ledger burned onto a single encrypted USB drive.
He had lived under the radar ever since, establishing himself as an independent security consultant in Chicago. Then he met Maya Vance.
Maya was everything Derrick wasn't: honest, brilliant, and full of light. She was an architect aiming to revitalize underprivileged communities through affordable, sustainable commercial housing. When she took on the 4th Avenue project, Derrick invested heavily through a blind trust to fund her vision.
He had thought his past was buried deep enough. He was wrong.
Derrick started the engine and drove through the slick, rain-slicked streets toward the industrial district along the Chicago River.
Twenty minutes later, he pulled up outside a dilapidated brick warehouse bearing a faded sign: VANCE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN - STORAGE FACILITY.
He unlocked the heavy iron gate using a master key Maya had given him months ago. Inside, the warehouse was dark, smelling of sawdust, blueprint paper, and wet concrete. Derrick navigated through rows of architectural scale models until he reached the rear office.
He flipped the light switch. Sitting on Maya’s desk was a duplicate set of structural blueprints for the 4th Avenue concourse.
Derrick unrolled the heavy paper under the desk lamp. His sharp, trained eyes scanned the structural load diagrams. Near the bottom corner of section B-4, he noticed a tiny, handwritten revision note stamped with an unfamiliar engineer's seal.
"He didn't just sabotage the site," Derrick muttered to himself, tracing his finger along the blue lines. "He framed her."
Julian hadn't just arranged a physical collapse—he had altered the digital building filings submitted to the city inspector. If the building department discovered those altered calculations, Maya wouldn't just lose her project; she would face criminal charges for gross negligence and manslaughter.

Suddenly, the rustle of gravel outside signaled an approaching vehicle.
Derrick snapped the desk light off, stepping instantly into the deep shadow behind a steel support beam, his hand slipping inside his coat to grip the handle of his concealed firearm.
