Chapter 4 - AwakeningsBy 4:00 AM, Derrick was back in the observation hallway of Metropolitan General.

The sleet had stopped, leaving icy patterns across the high glass windows. Derrick had changed his blood-stained shirt in his car, his expression unreadable as he watched the intensive care unit through the glass window.
Maya’s condition had stabilized. The oxygen mask had been replaced with a light nasal cannula, and her vitals on the cardiac monitor showed a steady, resting rhythm of 68 beats per minute.
A nurse stepped out of Bay 4, holding a clipboard.
"Mr. Sterling?" she asked softly.
"Yes," Derrick stepped forward. "How is she?"
"She’s waking up," the nurse smiled gently. "The sedation has worn off. You can go in for a few minutes, but keep it quiet. She’s had a severe concussion and two broken ribs."
Derrick pushed open the heavy door, stepping into the quiet, sterile room.
The smell of antiseptic and rubbing alcohol was overpowering. Maya lay under the crisp white sheets, her dark skin pale, a small white bandage covering a cut near her hairline. As Derrick walked to her bedside, her heavy eyelids fluttered open.
"Derrick..." she whispered, her voice barely a rasp.
Derrick reached out, taking her cold, trembling hand gently in his own. His tattooed skin stood out starkly against her soft palm.
"I'm here, Maya," he said softly, leaning down. "Don't try to move."
"The site..." she choked out, tears forming in the corners of her eyes. "The concourse collapsed, Derrick... there were people down there... my drawings... what happened?"
"Listen to me," Derrick looked deep into her eyes, his voice steady and fiercely protective. "It wasn't your design, Maya. The calculations were altered after you submitted them."
Maya blinked, confused. "What? Who would... who would do that?"
Derrick hesitated for a split second. The impulse to protect her from the dark reality was strong, but he knew that silence would only get her killed.
"Your uncle Marcus," Derrick said quietly. "He took money from Julian Sterling. They framed you to seize control of the 4th Avenue contract."
Maya’s breath caught in her throat. "My uncle? No... no, that’s impossible. Marcus raised me after my parents..."
"I have the proof, Maya," Derrick squeezed her hand gently. "I know this is terrifying, but I need you to trust me. I am going to fix this. But to do that, I have to finish something I started five years ago."
Maya searched his eyes, noticing for the first time the dangerous, dark edge under his gentle tone—the shadow of a man she realized she didn't fully know.

"Derrick..." she whispered, clutching his hand tightly. "Who are you really?"
Before Derrick could answer, the electronic door behind him clicked open.
