Chapter 20 - Beyond the GlassSix months later.

The 4th Avenue project stood tall against the Chicago spring skyline—a breathtaking, twenty-story beacon of modern, sustainable architecture featuring sweeping glass panels, green terrace gardens, and an open, light-filled public concourse on the ground floor.

A crowd of hundreds—city officials, news reporters, community leaders, and local residents—gathered around the grand entrance ribbon.

Maya stood at the podium in a stunning emerald-green dress, a pair of oversized silver scissors in her hand. Behind her, a massive brass plaque mounted to the limestone wall read:

THE VANCE CIVIC CENTER

DESIGNED BY MAYA VANCE

BUILT ON INTEGRITY, TRUTH, AND RECOVERY

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause as Maya cut the thick red ribbon, officially opening the building to the city.

Reporters flashed cameras, and city officials stepped forward to shake her hand, but Maya's eyes searched the perimeter of the plaza until she found the man standing near the edge of the crowd.

Derrick stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass entrance, wearing a tailored black suit, his dark hair neatly styled. The geometric tattoo on his hand caught the warm afternoon sunlight, no longer a mark of a dark past, but a symbol of the shield he had carried to protect her.

Maya handed the scissors to her head engineer, stepped down from the stage, and walked straight through the crowd toward him.

Derrick smiled as she reached him, taking her hand gently in his.

They walked together through the open glass doors into the vast, sunlit atrium. Sunlight poured through the soaring glass canopy above, reflecting off the polished marble floors, illuminating every corner of the space with bright, clean light.

There were no more shadows. No more hidden ledgers. No more glass walls separating them from the truth.

"It's beautiful, Maya," Derrick whispered, looking up at the high glass ceiling.

"We built it together," Maya said, leaning her head against his shoulder as they stood side by side in the center of the hall, looking toward the bright future ahead.
