Chapter 11 - The Syndicate's Strike

The server console gave a sharp, high-pitched chime as the progress bar hit one hundred percent. The encrypted ledger, containing five years of Julian Sterling's wire transfers, altered building permits, and payoffs to city officials, was now sitting securely on the Federal District Court’s internal network.

In the damp basement corridor of Sub-level 2, Marcus Vance stared down the barrel of Derrick's pistol. His knees shook so violently he had to press his back against the wet concrete wall to keep from collapsing.

"Derrick... please," Marcus stammered, raising his hands. "I was forced into this. Julian... he threatened to burn down my house with my family inside!"

"Save it for the grand jury, Marcus," Derrick said, his tone as cold as the rainwater dripping from the overhead pipes. He didn't lower the weapon. Without breaking eye contact, he reached out with his left hand, pulled Maya gently behind his back, and secured her against his frame.

"Derrick, the upload..." Maya whispered, clutching the back of his coat, her breathing shallow from the pain in her ribs. "Is it done?"

"It's over," Derrick said. "The federal prosecutor's office received the master key three seconds ago. Automated arrest warrants are being generated right now."

Before the relief could set in, a sudden, deafening explosion rocked the upper floor of the 4th Avenue site.

The concrete ceiling above them groaned under a rain of dust and pulverized mortar. Sparks showered down from shattered conduit lines, plunging the basement into pitch darkness, save for the blue glow of the server rack and the red emergency lights flickering along the corridor.

"He's here," Derrick muttered, his body instantly locking into tactical readiness.

Julian Sterling hadn't waited for the federal marshals to knock on his door. Realizing the transmission couldn't be blocked from a computer terminal, he had dispatched his primary strike team to destroy the physical building and eliminate everyone inside before the authorities could secure the site.

Heavily armed men in black tactical gear descended the main stairwell, their boots crunching against broken glass and concrete debris.

"Take Marcus and fall back to the sub-basement utility tunnel," Derrick ordered Maya, shoving a small tactical flashlight into her hand. "Now!"

"Derrick, no! I'm not leaving you!" Maya cried out.

"If they get past me, the hard drive won't matter because neither of you will be alive to testify," Derrick said, turning to look her in the eyes. For a split second, the lethal operative vanished, replaced by the man who had spent three years loving her from the shadows. He kissed her forehead briefly. "Go. I'll be right behind you."

May you like

Maya swallowed hard, grabbed her sobbing, terrified uncle by the collar, and dragged him toward the reinforced steel door leading to the utility tunnels.

Derrick turned back toward the stairwell, raising his silenced firearm into the dark as flashlights cut through the dust-choked air.
