Chapter 18 - The Fall of JulianThunder crashed directly overhead as lightning illuminated the rooftop.

Julian lay pinned beneath Derrick, gasping for air, his blood mixing with the rainwater pooling on the floor. He looked up into his younger brother's cold, dark eyes, realizing for the first time that his control was completely, irrevocably broken.

"Do it..." Julian choked out, a bitter, bloody smile touching his lips. "Kill me... prove you're just like me, Derrick... finish it..."

Derrick pulled his fist back, his muscles trembling with five years of suppressed rage, grief, and pain. The tattoo on his hand burned in the flashing light.

For three agonising seconds, silence fell over the rooftop, broken only by the sound of the howling wind.

Slowly, deliberately, Derrick unclenched his fist. He opened his palm, pressing it flat against Julian's chest, holding him firmly to the floor without violence.

"I'm not like you, Julian," Derrick said softly, his voice cutting clean through the storm. "And you're not worth dying for."

Sudden, blinding white searchlights cut through the darkness from above.

The heavy, rhythmic chop of twin helicopter rotors shattered the night air as two tactical FBI transport choppers hovered thirty feet above the open floor plate. Spotlights illuminated every inch of the 40th floor in brilliant illumination.

"FBI! DON'T MOVE!" amplified voices roared from the choppers.

Dozens of heavily armed tactical officers rushed out from the central stairwell, their weapons trained on the scene. Special Agent Mercer stepped into the spotlight, holding his badge high, flanked by six federal marshals.

"Derrick! Step away!" Mercer ordered through a megaphone.

Derrick slowly raised his hands, stepping back from his brother.

Tactical officers swarmed forward, pinning Julian to the floor, snapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists. Julian screamed curses into the rain, his voice drowned out by the thunder and the roaring helicopter blades, as he was dragged toward the stairwell in federal custody.

The Sterling Syndicate was dead.

Derrick turned around slowly.

Maya was leaning against the concrete column, shivering in the freezing wind, rain streaming down her face. Derrick walked over to her, unbuttoning his heavy tactical coat, and wrapped it gently around her trembling shoulders.

He gathered her into his arms, pulling her tight against his chest. Maya buried her face in his neck, clutching his shirt, weeping tears of pure relief as the storm finally began to recede over the city skyline.
