Chapter 10 - The Dawn of HealingTwo weeks later, the morning sun poured through the wide windows of our new home—a quiet, sunlit bungalow near the coast, far away from the dark memories of our old house.

Emma sat on a soft rug in the living room, surrounded by new coloring sets and stuffed animals. Her hair was starting to grow back healthy and thick, and her laughter filled the bright rooms with a sweetness I thought I would never hear again.
Nurse Amy, who had become a close family friend, stepped through the front door carrying a box of freshly baked pastries.
"Look who brought treats!" I called out, wiping my hands on a dish towel as I walked out of the kitchen.
"Amy!" Emma cheered, dropping her crayons and running over to wrap her arms around Amy’s knees.
"Hey there, supergirl!" Amy laughed, scooping Emma up into a warm hug. "Look at you! You're moving around like a track star!"
"The doctor said her blood work came back completely clear yesterday," I said, joining them in the hallway with a bright smile. "The heavy metals are entirely gone from her system."
"That is the best news I've heard all month," Amy said softly, looking around the peaceful house. "How are you holding up, Hannah?"
"We're safe," I said, looking out the window toward the ocean horizon. "For the first time in years, we are completely safe."

Emma took Barnaby the stuffed bunny and pulled Amy toward her play area. "Amy, come see the drawing I made of our new house!"

I watched them play, taking a deep, clean breath of fresh air. The terrifying night outside Room 412, the cold call at 11:07 p.m., and the shadows that had nearly swallowed our lives were finally behind us.
My daughter was breathing. She was fighting. And together, we had won.
