Chapter 16 - The Unsolved Shadow

Two months after Trevor’s conviction, life had settled into a gentle rhythm. Emma enrolled in a local Montessori kindergarten near our coastal home, making fast friends and thriving in the brisk ocean air. Yet, every time I looked at the framed photo of my late father, Arthur Vance, a quiet dread stirred in my chest.

A sharp knock at the door interrupted my thoughts on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Detective Marcus Vance stood on the porch, shaking water off his trench coat.

"Hannah," Marcus said, stepping inside as I offered him a hot mug of coffee. "I have the preliminary report from the state medical examiner."

I sat at the kitchen table, my hands trembling slightly around my cup. "They exhumed my father's body?"

"Yes," Marcus replied, sitting opposite me. "Because of the yellowed note you recovered from Trevor's office frame, the State Attorney General authorized an expedited exhumation and tissue toxicology panel last month. Arthur's original death certificate listed acute myocardial infarction, but we had specialized labs run full elemental screens."

"And?"

Marcus leaned forward, his face grave. "Trace amounts of thallium compounds were detected in his bone matrix and hair roots. It was slow-dose administration over a six-month period prior to his death four years ago—identical to the compound Trevor used on Emma."

A cold, hollow breath left my lungs. "He murdered my father..."

"He did," Marcus confirmed tightly. "Arthur’s sudden fatal 'heart attack' was actually acute thallium toxicity. Trevor used your father’s death to secure his position as executive director of logistics and gain temporary proxy access to the family trust before the secondary lock triggered."

"Will they charge him again?" I asked, a fire igniting inside me.

"The grand jury has already returned a true bill," Marcus said. "A secondary indictment for First-Degree Murder will be served to Trevor at the state penitentiary tomorrow. He’s already serving life without parole, but this ensures every legal loophole is closed permanently. He will never leave a maximum-security cell."

I looked out the window at the gray waves crashing against the shoreline. My father hadn't died of natural illness; he had been taken from me by a wolf brought directly into our home. But now, the truth was out in the open. The shadows were finally forced into the light.
