Chapter 8 - The Shadow at the WindowThree days later, Emma was moved out of the ICU into a private pediatric recovery room on the third floor. The clear plastic breathing tubes were finally gone, replaced by a simple nasal cannula. Her color was returning, and though she was still weak, she was sitting up in bed, coloring in a picture book with Barnaby sitting beside her.

"Mommy, when can we go home?" Emma asked, her voice still slightly raspy from the ventilator.

I smiled, smoothing her dark curls away from her forehead, hiding the deep anxiety gnawing at my stomach. "Soon, sweetheart. The doctors just want to make sure your tummy is completely better."

A knock sounded at the door. I turned, expecting Nurse Amy, but instead, a tall, well-dressed woman in a navy tailored suit stepped into the room. She carried a sleek leather briefcase and possessed a sharp, commanding presence.

"Mrs. Brooks?" she asked politely. "My name is Victoria Sterling. I'm a senior managing partner at Sterling & Vance Legal Counsel."

I stood up defensively. "If you're here on behalf of Trevor's employer—"

"I'm not here representing the company, Mrs. Brooks," Victoria interrupted gently, pulling a business card from her jacket and handing it to me. "I represent the whistleblowers and victims of corporate fraud. I was retained yesterday by your late father's estate trust."

I blinked in confusion. "My father's trust? My father passed away four years ago. His estate was closed."

"Not entirely," Victoria said, closing the door quietly behind her. "Your father, Arthur Vance—who, as you know, co-founded the firm Trevor worked for—placed a secondary protective contingency clause in his corporate trust. It stated that if any corporate executive attempted to alter or liquidate shares associated with his family lineage under fraudulent circumstances, the entire holding trust would immediately freeze and transfer primary power of attorney to you."

My breath caught. "My father protected me?"

"Your father never fully trusted Trevor," Victoria said, a small, knowing smile touching her lips. "He set up this safety net before he died. Trevor thought he was embezzling from a standard corporate account, but he was actually draining funds from a trust structure that was tied directly to your maiden name."

Victoria opened her briefcase and pulled out a thick document. "Because Trevor used fraudulent means to tamper with the company and your family assets, the court has granted an emergency injunction. Trevor’s access to all funds has been permanently terminated. Furthermore, your father’s trust has officially released $2.5 million in accrued dividends directly into a brand-new private account created solely in your name."

I pressed my hand to my heart, overwhelmed by a sudden wave of tears. "I... I can pay for Emma's medical care."

"You can pay for everything, Mrs. Brooks," Victoria stated firmly. "And I am here to make sure Trevor Brooks never sees a single dime—or a single day of freedom—for the rest of his life."
